HAWERA SCHOOL CONTROL

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Hawera school committee was held on Thursday, Mr. M. A. Rowlands presiding over an attendance of five. The headmaster. Mr. J. W. Thomas, renorted that the average attendance tor the past quarter had been 554, 86 children having been admitted and 53 withdrawn A visit had been paid recently by Misses Valentine and Muir, departmental officers, in connection with special classes. School work was pi o’gi easing satisfactorily. The school swimmin" lessons had concluded. During the season 25 children had qualified for learners’ certificates over oO yards, 3for proficiency certificates over 220 yards and 21 for certificates of merit over SbO vards. He was not in favour of children swimming a greater distance than SSO vards as the long time spent in the water and the strain of a further distance was too much of a tax on tnen strength. A few days ago a lire had occurred in the . vicinity, of the incinerator, apparently caused by burning paper blowing into a hedge. The hedge had been partially burned but although little serious damage had been done it had been necessary to procure the services of the fire brigade. The senool s annual picnic at N’gamotu beach, New Plymouth, had been very enjoyable and a financial success. At the school swimming championships £5 4s lid had been collected and would be available for subsidies for school material. The senior swimming championships had been won by Doris Gilinoie and Ray Petersen and the junior championships by Betty Smith and Ainoid Hunter.

The arranging of a device to prevent burning fragments from blowing from tho incinerator was left in the hands of tho headmaster to report upon. The visiting committee was instructed to report upon the question of supplying further bicyclo accommodation.

GENERAL ITEMS.

The sheep weight judging competition at the Hawera gymkhana on Wednesday resulted in Mr. J. O’Sullivan and Mrs. L. M. Tonks each guessing to within half a pound of the correct weight, which was 1461 b. The first prize went to Mr. O’Sullivan, Mr. Tonks taking second prize and Mr. E. L. Death third. Facilities at Ohawc beach should considerably benefit if the euchre party and dance to be held in the Tokaora hall on Wednesday, April 13, receives the support deserved. Fruit and vegetables will be sold at the Union Street salerooms At 11 o’clock this morning by R. P. Morrissey and Co. and will be followed by. household furniture, poultry, a quiet pony and. sundries at 1.15. ■ On account of a Hawera retailer there will also be offered a quantity of soft goods. A euchre party for the benefit ot the Manaia Public School funds will be held in the eupper room of the Manaia Lown Hall, on Tuesday next, April 1. _ , The Te Kiri Scottish Association's annua] sports meeting will be - held in the Te Kiri Domain on April 30. An energetic committee is leaving no stone unturned to make the forthcoming event a huge success. All arrangements are well in hand, and the pi ogi amine will be advertised at an early date. Splendid cash prizes are offered for all events. Included in the programme are running, walking, chopping, sawing, and numerous other attractive competitions. A dance is to follow. Watch this paper for monster programme. A collision occurred, on Thursday at the junction of Ahipaipa and Main South Roads, Inaha, between a car driven by J. H. Ledbetter, New. Plymouth, and one driven by a Native, Rangi Taka. Mr. Ledbetter’s car was emerging from the side road while the other vehicle was proceeding along the main road towards Hawera. The Native’s car had the fiont wheels and axle broken, the other vehicle sustaining slight damage to the running board and mudguard, .Die occupants were uninjured. Judgment by default was entered at the Manaia Magistrate’s Court yesterday in the claim M. L. Merrie v. E. Leach for £l9 10s and costs £1 3s. On a judgment summons’ W. A. Lhnbrick was ordered to pay G. A. Murray £72 and costs £1 Ils 6d, in default 21 days imprisonment. The sheep guessing at the Manaia sports last week resulted in a tie between Messrs. J. S. McKay, C. P. Crowley and R. Donald, who each guessed IKP/zlb. The weight of the sheep was 1161 b Coz. The prize was presented to Mr. Donald.

There was a good attendance at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Manaia, on Wednesday evening when the first euchre party of the season was held by the Manaia branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union. The function was held in aid of the "community chest” fund to be devoted to the assistance of women on the land. The proceeds will considerably augment the funds. The prize-win-ners were: —Miss Cowling (first), Mrs. R. H. Donald (hidden prize) and Mrs. F. McPhillips (consolation); Messrs. Wallace (first), Warner (hidden) and F. Guise (consolation). Music for the dance, was by Mrs. W. T. Wells and Miss Flossie Hughes. The Pukengahu sports on Thursday were followed by a successful dance in the Pukengahu hall. There was a large attendance of local and visiting dancers. Messrs. Bert McFee and IF. O’Neill, masters of ceremonies, kept tire dances swinging along briskly and Coburn’s orchestra played the music. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Walsh and Mr. Arnold.

HAWERA TENNIS TEAMS.

Teams representing the Hawera and Eltham Tennis dubs will play a match at Hawera this afternoon. Following is the Hawera teajnt K. MacFarlane, J. Pease, R. Syme, N. Bramwell, P. O. Veale, D. C. Ryan, R. H. Leeco and G. Meyriek; Mesdames Rudge, Duncan and Haase, Misses Moginie, E. Hawken, M. Rowans, E. Buist and D. Hawken.
