THE BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

RECORD OF LIFE-SAVING AWARDS

PRIMARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATES.

A comprehensive report of the ewinaming activities this season at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School has been furnished. In all 148 boys receiving instruction in life-saving have passed the tests, while 202 have gained swimming certificates. Ten ' boys have qualified for their award of merit. This is the second highest Royal Society award and the conditions are very exacting. A rescue over 20 yards has'to be carried out by a fully clothed competitor, and 600 yards of continuous swimming, breaststroke, backstroke and' free style is required. The competitor has to disrobe on the surface of the water. Three fancy dives, three fancy strokes, a long plunge and a dive for an object are other requirements. Sixteen surf medallions, the first obtained at the school, are to be awarded to successful swimmers in the examination, the conditions of which entail a 400 yards swim through the surf. Three honorary instructors’ awards, 33 bronze medallions, 43 proficiency and 43 elementary certificates make up the total of awards. Seventy elementary (50 yartLs), 66 proficiency and 66 merit (880 yards and upward) certificates have been qualified for this season and most of the entrants have been coached since the beginning of the school term. In the open life-saving pennant competition, held at Opunake, the school entered two teams, the A team winning the competition arid the B team being 6th. The teams were: A team—L. THE OKATO CARNIVAL.

The Okato Swimming Chib has arranged a very attractive programme for its carnival, which is to be held- on April 5 to wind Up th<? season. The programme includes 33 1-3 yards primary school children’s handicaps for boys and girls, 50 yards secondary schoolboys’ handicap, 33 1-3 yards ladies’'in-ter-club handicap, and 33 1-3 and 66 2-3 ■yards men’s inter-club races. Perhaps greatest interest will attach lo ’the inter-club relay race for fournen teams, in which it is expected New

Plymouth and Opunake, who put up such a great race in the Grey Cup, will compete. Novelty and diving events are also included. Entries close with the secretary, Mr. C. G. Cocksedge, at 8 o’clock next Wednesday evening. The first event- is timed to start at 1.30 p.m., and the club’s enterprise is certainly deserving of liberal entries from swimmers as well as support from spectators.
