DOMINION BAND CONTEST
FIRST DAY COMPETITIONS. ' C GRADE AND'PIPE BANDS, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Feb. 23. The New Zealand championship brass and Highland pipe band contests were commenced yesterday in fine weather. A sum of close on £4OO was taken at the gates, representing over 6000 people. Re-., suits:— .. • DRUM MAJOR DISPLAY. < Newton, Christchurch Scottish 1 Gilchrist, Dunedin Highland 2 IV. Limin, Wanganui 8 C GRADE QUICKSTEP. Own Choice. Green Island, 247 points I Waimate, 232 points 2 Naseby, 228 points ' 8 Milton 221 points, Maniototo 215, Rest Harbour 205, Papanui 192. Several of the bands lost volume of sound and balance when making their turning evolutions, Papanui and West; Harbour losing music points here. The spectators fully agreed with the judges in placing Green Island first. PIPE BAND QUICKSTEP. Own Choice. Christchurch Scottish, 177£ points .. 1 Wanganui, 174£pts 2 Wellington, 169pts 3 Dunedin 166, Balclutha 166, Canter*, bury 164, North Otago 152. Some -of the bands were handicapped by small numerical strength. Christ*church Scottish started with the roll and rattle of drums, and swinging along with great clan, their tartans fluttering in the breeze, made a gallant showing. Dunedin was not so spectacular, though marching with greater precision. .The .contests were continued in the town hall in the evening, with the following results; — ' . PIPE BAND SELECTION.
