CENTURY IN CRICKET MATCH.

The Riverlea people were fortunate in having such a perfect day as Friday for the annual school picnic and sports at Opunako beach. All enjoyed surf bathing and much of the day was taken up with the sports and a cricket match between married men and single. The children’s races resulted:— . Dew, dead-heat, 3. . , Great interest was taken in the cricket match Married v. Single, all striving to catch the 'selectors’ eye in view of the approaching match with Kaponga. The married men soundly trounced their opponents to the tune of 192 to 94. A feature of the play was the. century by H Harre, who was ably assisted by the stone-walling tactics of E. Chapman and J Kenyon. The bowling of Voullaire and the fielding of J. Symes, sen., were notable. On the day’s play the team is almost certain to be composed of all married men.

RIVERLEA ITEMS. Miss Edith ' Hey, who until recently was on the teaching staff of the Riverlea school, has entered the training college, Auckland. Riverlea school was again successful in winning the shield at Eltham recently in the potato-growing competition, which was open to schools in South Taranaki. HARVEST BALL AT PIHAMA. A SUCCESSFUL EVENING. The Pihama settlers’ annual “harvest home” ball on Friday evening attracted a large crowd of dancers from all parts of South Taranaki and the hall was crowded with a merry throng until the early hours. The function was unanimously voted the most successful of its kind held in the district, the door receipts being over £42. The net profit is expected to be at least £2O, which is to go to the hall funds. The grand march was led off byMr. and Mrs. E. S. Forsyth and the direction of the evening’s programme was capably carried out by Messrs. E. S. Forsyth, A. Clarke, A. McHannigan and A. Campbell. The hall was profusely decorated overhead with red and blue streamers, while on the walls were nikau palms, tree ferns, hydrangeas and sets of crossed pitchforks, emblems of the harvest toil that was over. The decorative work was in the hands of Mesdames \V. Lambie, E. A. Poole and G. Hunt, while the supper arrangements were carried out by the following committee of ladies: Mesdames D. Harrop, P. S. Riley, E. 8. Forsyth, J. D. Conaglen, A. Campbell, E. A. Poole, G. Corkill, A.' Petty, G. Hunt, T. Carey,, J. Hall and Misses McHannigan, Riley, Forsyth, M. Conaglcn, Newsham, Taylor, Dew and Stannaway. The dance music was played by Coburn's star-orchestra and supper extras were contributed by Misses Pollock, Field and Arden, Mrs. Thurston and Mr. Stcffert.
