SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Waitara school committee was held on Monday evening, Mr. L. Wilson presiding in the absence of the chairman, who is indisposed. The Education Board advised that the usual capitation and a special amount of £ll had been granted, and that AJiss Hutchinson had been appointed a relieving assistant. The chairman, reporting on the school baths, stated that the leak had been found and rectified by Mr. C. Limmer, and the control of the baths under the swimming club’s management had so far proved satisfactory, the cleaning and filling being efficiently carried out. Mr. Glasgow reported that as a result of an interview with the trustees of thb old Waitara Racing Club the had consented to grant £3O for the erec'r tion of an ornamental fence. This amount, carrying a £1 for £1 subsidy, ..was considered sufficient for the work. The trustees were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. ■’ -; / ■ ■ - : . ' It was reported by Mr. Glasgow that Waitara had come seventh on the list, and only seven marks below the winners in the Cuthbert Shield competition. The committee expressed its satisfaction and congratulated the headmaster - and staff. The headmaster reported- that the roll at the end of the present week would not exceed 360, whereas the year closed with a roll of 375. He also mentioned that the school was fortunate insofar as there were no staff changes, which was somewhat unusual. ’ Mr. T. Taylor stated the borough council was taking steps to beautify the soldiers’ cemetery on the school grounds, and in view of that he asked for the committee’s permission to remove overhanging bamboos.. Permission was granted. The annual picnic was discussed —several committeemen being in favour of the parents paying the fares.this year,*owing to the committee haying.used all available funds. Other committeemen were against this, and it was finally decided to hold a mart to raise the necessary money. The Freezing'Works Union executive is also to be interviewed with a view of arranging one of their holidays for picnic day. The general opinion was that the picnic should be held at Kawaroa Park. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mr. VV. Glasgow in his illness and to Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Sutton in their bereavement. Votes of thanks for services rendered were passed to Mr. E. Proctor, Mr. W. B. Hoskin and Mr. G. Foster.
The annual bowling tournament for the Raleigh Cup will be decided on the Waitara green to-day between the Freezing works rinks and Town rinks.
