The summer has so far belied a Kihikihi mail’s tentative prophecy, made some six weeks ago, that it would be dry and hot, not wet and cold. He based his prediction on an old English jingle: “If the ash is before the oak, we’re sure to get a thorough soak. If the oak is before the ash, then wo’ll only get a splash.” He said that ho had found oak trees in his neighbourhood well forward in leaf at a time ash trees scarcely gave any hint of green.
