The United States Chief Justice, Mr. W. H. Taft, has resigned, reports A Washington cable. The condition of his health is believed to be responsible for the resignation. President Hoover has nominated Mr. Charles Evans Hughes to succeed Chief Justice Taft, who was appointed in 1921 at the age of 65. Mr. Victor E. Cromart, a former associate of world {famous -figures like Messrs Ramsay MacDonald, Lenin and Trotsky, has died at Sydney. He was himself a remarkable personality and claimed to exercise the gift of t'Uieh.s. healing. Ho was 47 years of .age and: was a native of South Australia. Ho began life.on a newspaper. He was Aus-Li tralian representative at the Socialist conference at Stuttgart in 1907. Mr. W. E. Brown, examiner of titles at New Plymouth, who has been ap- L pointed district land registrar and assistant commissioner of ’Stamp duties at Hokitika,- was yesterday presented y with a clock by tho staff of the New Plymouth office. Mr. A. L. B. Ross, district land registrar and assistant commissioner of stamp duties, who made the presentation, referred appreciatively to the work of Mr. Brown over a period of some years in New Plymouth, and said that Mr. Brown’s departure •< would meaif a loss not only to th® office but the many activities with which he had been associated in Plymouth. Later in the day Mr. Brown was. made a presentation by the members of the New Plymouth Debating Society, of which he was chairman. A veteran of tho Maori Wars, Mr. William Eustace Whitcombe, died suddenly at Christchurch on Friday at the age of 82 years. He was born in Jersey. and was the third son. of the late Captain jf. D. Whitcombe, of the Madras Royal Artillery. He received his education in England and France, and with his brother, Mr. C. D. Whitcombe, he emig rated to New Zealand in 1864, landing at Nelson. He proceeded immediately to Bell Block, Taranaki, joining up with the Military Settlers Corps. He saw active service against the Maoris until 1870, and received the New Zealand medal. In 1901 he left tho North Island to.take up his residence in Christchurch, and was for twenty years with the firm of Pyne and Co. He leaves a widow, a son, and. six daughters. His only surviving brother is Mr. S. F. Whitcombe, formerly railway traffic superintendent in the Sou i Island. Another brother, the late Mr. G. H. Whitcombe, was the founder oi the firm of Whitcombe and Tymps. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of the Rev. C. P^™ B^ 118 ' distant Rabbi, at ’the age of 03, says Press Association message.
