PATEA HARBOUR BOARD

SATISFACTORY DEPTH OF WATER. The Patea Harbour Board held its monthly meeting yesterday, there being present Messrs. A. T. Christensen (chairman), A. H.’ Hodge, W. H. Watkins, J. R. Corrigan, S. Blake, A. Pearce and A. H. Williams. The harbourmaster and pilot (Captain W. Tinney) reported that during December the channel between the walls had been good after a fresh which had scoured the bank- away. There had been ten feet of water between the walls and 9ft. 6in. on the bar, with 7ft. 3in. on the tide gauge. Sixteen vessels had arrived and the same number departed, five going out on the lights. During January the channel, over the bar had been good, but lie thought the sand was making up a little inside. On January 16 there had been 16ft. of water on the bar, 12ft. between the walls, and 13ft inside and 9ft. on the tide gauge. There was now about 13ft, between the walls and 16ft.- on the bar at high water spring tides, while at high water neap was about 9ft. between the walls. There had been 16 arrivals and the same number of departures during January, six vessels going out on the lights. Satisfaction with the depth of water on the bar was expressed by several members, who considered that the new drag plant was doing its work very efficiently. The pilot said he could not remember an occasion when the water was deeper. Ten owners of beach cottages petitioned the board with ‘ a view to obtaining some official recognition of their ownership and permission to occupy the sites >at a nominal rental on condition that the cottages should be removed at once if at any time the land was required for harbour purposes. After a lengthy discussion’ the chairman stated that the board’did not desire to make a profit from the cottages, but a charge should be made to effect much needed improvements. It was decided that the Patea members of the board should go into the matter andformulate a scheme. The dredgemaster, Mr. A. H. Mercer, reported that since the previous meeting of the board the overhaul of the dredge had been completed, and it was now in good working condition. It had been discovered that there was a considerable leakage of sand and shingle on the western wall. This had been flowing into the river mouth in considerable quantities for about 100 ft. Repairs had been effected. He thought there had been a slight subsidence in the wall and this had probably closed the leaks. Soundings along the grader wharf had disclosed that a considerable shelving had taken place, particularly at the lower end between the two wharves. PATEA PERSONALS.
