NIGHT EXPRESS TRAINS

NEW PLYJIOUTII TO WELLINGTON. TO COMMENCE IN FOUR WEEKS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. It is understood the night express service from Wellington to New Plymouth, and vice versa, will be inaugurated at the end of the present month or early in March. Last year the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, backed by other chambers, strongly pressed the innovation upon both the general manager of railways and the Minister for Railways. Mr. Sterling has since given the project most careful consideration, and has been making inquiries elsewhere as to the possibilities of using for such a purpose more economical engines and trains than the present standard expresses. An official of the department has'been abroad making inquiries as to the suitability of the Diesel engines, etc., reports from the makers of which had been extremely favourable. The department has not yet mde up its mind as to the suitability of the engines, and probably the new night express will be a composite one—passenger and fast freightage. It is hoped the departure will meet with the support it deserves'. If it docs the Railway Department can be relied upon to do its best to improve the service in every way possible. If the new service is the success anticipated it will strike a deadly blow at the through motor services between the two centres that havo recently been developed.
