ECONOMICS OF THE EMPIRE
THE NEW ADVISORY COUNCIL. STUDY TO' BE CONTINUOUS. Received 5.5 p.m. British Wireless. Rugby, Jan. 29. Following the announcement made by the Prime Minister recently in the House of Commons a Treasury minute is issued regarding the estaolishment of the Economic Advisory Council. The purpose of the council is to advise the Government in economic matters. It will make a continuous study of developments of trade and industry, and in the use of national and Empire resources, of the effect of legislation and fiscal policy at home and abroad, and of all aspects of national, Imperial and international economy ith their bearing on the prosperity of the country- ... The chairman will be the Prime Minister. The council will take over and expand the functions of the existing committee of civil research. The members of the council will be the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Minister in charge of unemployment problems, the President of the Board of Trade and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. There will also be as members other persons chosen by reason of their special knowledge and experience in industry and economics. The council may invite inquiries into and advice upon any subject falling within its scope, including proposals for legislation. Its reports and work will be confidential ' unless the council advises the Prime Minister otherwise. Any action arising out of them will be taken on the sole responsibility of the Government.
