IMPORTING “UNEMPLOYED”
CITY SINGLE MEN AT GISBORNE. MAYOR PROTESTS TO MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. As a sequel to several deputations the Mayor of Gisborne, Mr. D. W. Coleman, telegraphed the Minister of Public Works stating that approximately 150 men were out of work in the town and asking the Minister to authorise the placing of additional men on the railway works. To-day the Mayor received a reply that the Minister would look into the position immediately and advise at the earliest possible date. The Mayor has written the Minister stating it is reported that 17 men arrived here yesterday from Rotorua and were being transported to railway works. The Mayor commented to the Minister that this was very unfair to the local men.
It is understood that these men were sent to the railway works from the Auckland Labour Bureau in an effort to alleviate unemployment in the northern centre. Another gang of 15 men, also from Auckland it is understood, arrived at the Waikokopu end of the railway on the previous day. All the members of both gangs are single men.
