FATALITY AT TOKOMARU BAY
BRAVE RESCUE EFFORT FAILS. By Tclegraifli;—Press Association. Gisborne,. Jan. 30. C. J. Rampton, aged 25, single, an exchange clerk in the Tokomaru Bay post office, was drowned on the beach at Tokomaru Bay this morning. He wafi swept out to sea by the backwash while bathing. The body has not yet been recovered. With two other postal officials, Charles Little and Douglas Burnett, he. went bathing at 11 o’clock, Rampton entering the water first. When Little had passed the first line of breakers-he saw Rampton signalling that he was in difficulties, and he swam to his assistance. Little secured a hold on his comrade, but was not a strong swimmer, and Rampton sank. Little was brought ashore in a very exhausted condition. Mr.. Rampton was a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Rampton, Hine Street, New Plymouth. After leaving the Boys’ High School he joined the staff of the Post Office. About three years ago he was transferred to the Gisborne office and later to Tokomaru Bay.
