UNUSUAL ACCIDENT BEFORE RACE By Telegraph -Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A racecourse accident of.a very unusual nature which resulted in Jockey C. Eastwood’s sustaining grave injuries to his head occurred before the running of the Calliope Handicap race for two-year-olds at Takapuna to-day. The preliminaries were in progress and Sub Editor, ridden by H. Gray, and Top Star, ridden by Eastwood, were running down the straight together when Sub Editor suddenly swerved across in front of Top Star, which stumbled. Although the horse did not come down “Eastwood was unbalanced and was thrown heavily. The injured horseman was removed to hospital, where he was found to be suffering from grave injuries to the head. His condition late to-night was reported to be fairly serious. East wood, a married man aged 28 years, resides at Riccarton, Christchurch.
