BOWLING ©HAMPIONSHIP

SECTION PLAY CONTINUED THREE ROUNDS COMPLETED. SOME SPLENDID BOWLING SEEN. The Taranaki championship bowling tournament w as continued yesterday in fine but dull weather, good progress beiim made. The action of the executive in°deciding to reduce the games from 25 to 21 heads enabled the fourth round names, postponed owing to the rain the previous day, to be played at the conclusion of the fifth and sixth rou-d matches. Thus at the close of the third day’s play the leeway has been made up and to-day will see the concluding two rounds of section play decided, commencing at 9.30 o’clock. Yesterday some splendid bowling was witnessed, ‘the standard of . play-- 1 being high, though of course there were occasions when the luck of some teams was out and they were beaten by comfortable margins. In I .many Other games, however, the issue was in doubt till the last bowl. This was particularly the case in the match between Dingle (Fitzroy) and Big wood (West _End). Dingle was leading 19 —-7 at the 15th head, but he stopped at that and his opponent, scoring at' each head, including a five and a'four at the 18th and 19th, snatched the victory by one point on the last head. . ■ The position is becoming very interesting. r So far only two teams are unbeaten—Harris (-Stratford) in section B and O. Skoglund (Palmerston North) in section F. In section A at Paritutu the two unbeaten rinks skipped by Goodwin (Park) and Oliver (West End) sustained reverses;' McLeod/(New Plymouth), accounted for Goodwin, in the sixth round, .and in the fourth round, which was played subsequently, Goodwin defeated'Oliver. / In section B Harris (Stratford) maintained his unbeaten record, winning all three games. In the final game against Hill, tlie New Plymouth skip used all his driving powers in an effort to save the game,°driving no less than 17 times and burning the head five times. Truscott, the Carlton skip, sustained his first and only defeat so far at the hands of Beal (West End) in the fifth round, incidentally giving the West End skip his first game. . In section C Bolton (Victoria), so far unbeaten, was defeated by both Stone (Hawera) and Cottier (Inglewood), while . London, the other unbeaten skip, was defeated also by Stone, who is level with him. . In section D the position is somewhat complicated, as no less than four rinks in the lead have two defeats. In section E Abbott (Fitzroy) was beaten by Lee (West End), and he is now level with Lobb' (West’ End), who won all three o-ames. Whyte (Waitara) the other unbeaten skip, went under to both Lobb and Abbott. Indications are that there will be some great bowling before finality is reached. Yesterday’s scores are: — SECTION A.
