BETTER CHEESE QUALITY
MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN. ITS IMPORTANCE STRESSED. . By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 28. In the course of an interview Mr. J. B. Mac Ewan said everyone would be glad indeed to hear the assurance of the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands and Agriculture, that the officers of the Dairy Department were fully alive to the importance of maintaining the very highest quality in the butter and cheese exported from the Dominion. Mr. Mac Ewan has no doubt that the efforts of the Director of the Dairy Division will be attended by good results, but, in his opinion, the campaign for better and sustained quality, especially in the case of cheese, should be pushed ahead with more vigour than has yet been displayed. “This,” he insists, “is a national concern, not merely a sectional concern.” The public generally, Mr. MacEwau thinks, does not sufficiently understand the magnitude and the importance of the dairying industry. The wonder of its expansion seems better known at. the other end of the world than it is at this end. Whether or not there is to be a further expansion in the industry in the future, Mr. Mac Ewan holds, depends upon the authorities by whom th© industry, very properly, is controlled. “It is to be hoped that in the interests of all those concerned Mr. Forbes will see that representatives of the Dairy Division, Dairy Board, factories, exporters, trained experts, and of the long-suffering public, are brought together with the least possible delay.”
