I RACING FULL OF INTEREST. HONITON PROMISING FILLY. (■By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Fine weather favoured the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting to-day and the racing was full of interest. Prodice scored a narrow win in the Takapuna Cup and Lady Quex took the Stewards’ Handicap in brilliant fashion. Only two favourites were successful and the results were not altogether favourable to backers, although Mithra was the only winner to score at very long odds. An unusual accident occurred before the r running of the Calliope Handicap for two- - year-olds. Sub Editor, ridden by H--1 Gray, and Topstar, ridden by C. East--1 wood, were going down together in the 3 preliminary when Sub Editor swerved right ■ across Topstar, who got on his heels and ■ threw Eastwood out of the saddle. Eastf wood lay motionless on the ground and it was at once realised that he was injured. An examination revealed that he had sustained'concussion and a broken collarbone and he was immediately taken to hospital. Another unfortunate accident occurred in the Ferry Handicap when the favourite, Relation, broke a shoulder and had to be destroyed. , - Twenty-one started in the Trial Stakes and in a good pool there was most sup- ! port for the On Top-Measurer bracket. The . Nassau Lady-Principal Boy bracket, New Boy, Honiton and On Top were in charge J when the field settled down, Honiton drawing out near the turn leading into t' - ■ ’ straight clear of Chromadyne, New Boy ' and On Top. Nothing had a chance with Honiton at the finish and she won easily by two and a-half lengths from Chromadyne, who defeated New Boy by a neck. Helium was fourth and then came Sir ’ Mond and Loving Cup. The first and 1 second were at good prices, Cromadyne returning double figures. Honiton, who is a three-year-old filly by Marble Arch, had raced only once previously and is decidedly promising. Chromadyne, a full brother to Royal Abbey and Wedding March, was making his first public appearance and is also promising. Like his relatives he may make a good jumper when he gets the chance. LUMINARY SURVIVES PROTEST. The Orewa High weight Handicap was a fine betting race with Cybele, Wenday and Luminary at the head of the quotations. Wenday and Golden Wedding were badly left at the start, Golden Wedding having her chance extinguished. Luminary ran to the front early and at the end of four furlongs had established a lead of six lengths from King’s Guard, who was followed by Mashoor, Cybele and Quincoma. At the home turn Luminary was coming back but stayed on long enough to win by a head from King’s Guard. Cybele was two and a-half lengths away third and Wenday was fourth, with Quincoma next. An objection was lodged against the winner for interference with King’s Guard when he hung out near the post. The stewards decided that the interference was not sufficient to affect the result and took no action. Wenday was very unlucky in getting so badly left as he ran a fine race and must have been very dangerous with a decent getaway. MITHRA PERFORMS WELL. For the Zealandia Handicap Sir Russell was a decided favourite over White Wings and Respirator. Cynthia N. and White Wings ran to the front quickly, White Wings leading into the straight from Sir Ruesell, Cynthia N., Monsogne and Mithra. Once in line for the post Sir Russell challenged and then Mithra came fast on the outside. ■ In a good finish Mithra won byhalf a length from Sir Russell, which defeated the fast-finishing Maori Boy by a neck. White Wings was fourth, succeeded by Monsogne and Arikitoa. The winner was at a double-figure price. She was drawn on the extreme outside at the barrier and as she covered a good deal ol ground her performance was good. Sir Russell ran a solid race, while Maori Boy finished splendidly. White Wings showed plenty of speed and should soon do better. CC'RINAX HAD TOO MUCH TO DO. Solid wagering on the Takapuna Cup saw Royal Doulton favourite over Corinax and Prodice. Eager Rose and Corinax were smartest away and went on to make the pace, the others, with the exception of Transformer, High Pitch and In The Shade, which were tailed off, being bunched. Four furlongs from home Eager Rose and Corinax were still forcing the pace with Prodice and Royal Doulton handy and Transformer moving up. ' At the turn Prodice made a move on the outside of the leaders and she came on in the straight to beat Corinax by a neck. Royal Doulton was three-quarters of a length away third and Eager Rose fourth. Next came In The Shade and Le Choucas. Prodice was always well placed and Corinax was made too much use of and if his rider had dropped in behind Eager Rose instead' of going on the outside all the way he might have won. Eager Rose and Royal Doulton went good races and may do better at a shorter distance. TUKU’S SPLENDID SPEED. ' Twenty started in the Ferry Handicap and Relation was a hot favourite with 1 Tetarchate next in request. Tuku and Awamutu ran through quickly from outside positions to be in front along the back from Carl Idem, Crimestor and Relation. Tuku was clear at the home turn and stayed on to win very decisively by two lengths from Volimond, which finished on well to beat Carl Idem by a length and a-half. Crimestor was fourth, followed by Haviland and Tetrachate. The winner displayed plenty of speed early and never looked like being beaten -once he reached the front. Relation was going well in a handy position when the field settled down but he broke down badly near the home turn, where he lost his position quickly just before pulling'up. Volimond was going strongly at the post and seems to be coming on again. HARD WORDS STAYS TO WIN. The Hard Words-Smithfield bracket was backed down to odds on for the Calliope Handicap. Sub Editor and Hampton Park were best backed of the others. Foot Rule and Tremetus began quickly -but ; Hard Words soon ran through to join Fool Rule in the lead. Foot Rule retired at ; the turn and Hard Words, Tremetus and Set Fair came into the straight almost t abreast ahead of Bells of Shandon and Full Measure. Hard Words stayed on best at i the finish to win by three-quarters of a length from Tremetus, which defeated Full ( Measure by two lengths. Set Fair was fourth, followed by Bells of Shandon and ' Silence. Hard Words was all out at the finish to stall off Tremetus. Set Fair ; failed to run on while Full Measure shaped raspectably. Bells of Shandon shaped decently and. may be a likely improver. HAVASPOT BLOCKED ON RAILS. x Havaspot was a pronounced favourite ! for the Hauraki Hack with - Prince of Orange and Kaiwainga also well backed. Havaspot and Avoncourt led early but Havaspot was steadied after gomg three

furlongs, when Prince of Orange and Brampton moved up to tho lead. Brampton, Prince of Orange and Kawainga were racing abreast in the lead at the home turn with Havaspot on the rails next. Once in line for the post Havaspot tried to come through on the rails but was disappointed and had to come on the outside. While this was happening Kawainga assumed command and stayed on to beat Havaspot by a neck. Prince of ’ Orange was half a length away third and Bramp? ton was fourth, the others being well beaten. Havaspot seemed a certainty and was beaten apparently through the indifferent handling of R. S. Bagby. Prince of Orange had every chance and failed at the finish. LADY QUEX BRILLIANT/ Lady Quex was a hot favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, being about £7OO better backed than Gold Money. Prince Vai and Awarere were smartest to begin but Lady Quex, which had drawn the outside, soon rushed to the front from Awarere. Lady Quex led into the straight just ahead of. Prince Vai and Awarere with Gold Money coming fast. Lady Quex drew away again in the run home and won decisively by three lengths from Prince Val, z which defeated Gold Money by two lengths. Taneriri was fourth with Awarere and Town Bird well beaten. The winner showed a great dash of brilliancy and then finished splendidly. She is right at the top of her form. Gold Money was finishing on after tailing off early. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY. Auckland, Last Night. Weights for the second day of the Takapuna races are:— MOANA HANDICAP.
