THE MONTHLY SITTING. , ■ ; i i Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., presided Oveij the monthly sitting of the Wavetley Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, whhn a light list was .presented. C. H. Christian was charged with driv-| ing a motor vehicle without being a holder of a driver’s license. Mr. P. H. Graham appeared for the defendant and entered a plea of guilty. Defendant was convicted and fined £1 and costs 10s. Charged with supplying liquor to a Maori woman, Thomas McLachlan pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs 7 s. Only three civil cases were taken. R. E. Parker obtained judgment against W. White for £5 7s and coiste, and in the case Waverley Town Board v. Tait, judgment was entered for plaintiff for £9 5s 5d and costs. In a claim by R. Blake against E. K. Neil for possession and rent in arrears, an order was made that possesion be given on or before January 30 and judgment was entered for plaintiff for £l2 12s and costs. PERSONAL. Mr. E. C. Constant, former proprietor of the Egmont Hotel, Hawera, and now of Blenheim, ig visiting Hawera for a few days. Mr. C. H. M. MacPherson, inspector of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., is visiting Hawera. Mr. MacPherson was some years ago manager of the Hawera branch of the company.
GENERAL ITEMS. For some time past the Foxton Road: has been practically- closed to motor traffic owing to its • flooded condition after the recent heavy rains, and although it is now -understood to be passable a motorist using the road a day or so ago advises against its use. Stagnant water is creating a stench hardly' bearable and detracts greatly from the pleasures of the road. 'Following its recent successes at Wanganui, the Opunake life-saving team will compete in the New Zealand cham-v piontehips at Greymouth. Yesterday morning eight of the team were passengers south by the mail train. Judgment for plaintiff by default was entered in the following civil cases at, the Patea Magistrate’s Court <on Thursday: J. A. McKenna v. F. W. Tait, £4l 8s; Patea Borough Council v. Mary Hinewai, £25 6s lid. Charged with failure to send his son to school on five successive days during November last, Thomas Wilkinson was fined 10s with costs £1 Ils in the Patea Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Owing to the date of its tournament, which was to have been held at .Hawera on February 13, clashing with the Donovan-Sarron contest at New Plymouth two days later, the Hawera Boxing Association,' at ah emergency meet-, ing yesterday, decided to postpone the contest until February 21. On that date Jack Jones, the Welsh lightweight, will meet Glen Leslie, of Auckland, who defeated Donovan for tlie amateur featherweight title of the Dominion. One-time featherweight ■ and lightweightl champion of Wales, Jack Jones, who is residing in Hawera, has been appointed the official instructor of the Hawera Boxing Association and is available to give instruction in boxing orin physical culture. Amongst the one hundred odd -opponents -Jones has defeated are Ansell Bell, American negro; Lou. Bloom, America; Jack Roberts, Australia; and -the featherweight champion of Ireland, Wales, France, and Italy. He once met and was defeated on points, in The Ring, London, before the Prince of Wales, by Johnny Curley, Lonsdale Belt holder, and featherweight champion of the British Empire and Europe. Curley subsequently defeated Andre Routis, featherweight champion of the world. Miss Vera Moginie, late of Auckland, and Sydney, teacher of voice production and singing, will commence tuition at 111 Albion Street, Hawera, on Monday, January .27. Miss Winifred Huggins, teacher of pianoforte and theory, will resume teaching at 53 Victoria Street, Hawera, and at Normanby on Friday, January 31. Intending pupils will be interviewed on Thursday, January 30. Miss Betty Sturrock, A.R.C.M. (London), L.A.8., teacher of violin, theory, harmony and counterpoint, will resume tuition at 265 Princes Street, Hawera, on Monday,. February 3. Miss Sturrock has had the advantage of three years’ training in teaching with Rivarde at the Royal College of Music in London. Mr. J. C. Smith will offer at the Central Mart, Union Street, Hawera, to-day 250 cases of peaches, plums, Apples, black currants and tomatoes/- poultry, household furniture and effects. ' ? Miss G. E. Benton, L.T.C.L., L.A.8., who has had considerable experience in the teaching of pianoforte and theory of music, will resume tuition at Auroa. Awatuna and Hawera on .February L Her address is Auroa.
