SPORTSDALE BEAT MANAIA. A friendly tennis contest between Sportsdale (Stratford) and Manaia. at Manaia on Saturday resulted in a win for the visiting team by 140 games, 11 sets, to 121 games, 8 sets. Lindrum 300yds. GENERAL ITEMS. Satisfaction with the manner in which the various works in hand had been done by t-he county engineer was expressed by the chairman (Mr. J. B. Murdoch) and councillors at the meeting of the Hawera County .Council on Saturday. Surprise was expressed that' such excellent headway had been made when the unfavourable weather conditions were taken into account. Particular reference was made by Cr. Washer to the work done on the new subway at' the South Road crossing. He wished to congratulate the engineer upon his efforts. It was reported at the meeting of lhe Hawera County Council on Saturday that the finances of the county were £3OOO better than at the same time last year. During the two days prior to the meeting a total of over £2400 had been received at the office. This was considered a most satisfactory state of affairs. The work of the Hawera County Council was being lightened as the result of the purchase of ..new lorries, it was stated at the meeting on Saturday. One lorry was making daily trips covering 160 miles. • , ./< ■.. There are vacancies in -, the Hawera Municipal Auxiliary. Band, .and intending members may see the secretary (Mr. L° Hawkins) or the conductor (Mr. H. C. A. Fox). Rehearsals re-commcnce on Wednesday at 7 p.ni. About 20 dates for sports meetings have been booked by arious Taranaki sports clubs. This augured well for the success of the coming season, said Mr. J. A. Hansen at the annual meeting of the Manaia Sports Club on Saturday evening. There is a prospect of Phil O'Shea, the champion cycle rider, visiting Taranaki and competing at the Manaia Hibernian sports meeting, said the president, Mr. J. A. Hansen, on Saturday evening.
