SHOOTING A DAUGHTER

CRIPPLED AND DUMB. "MERCY MURDER” CASE. "Another mercy murder,” is the way officials account for the killing of his crippled and dumb daughter by Hr. John A. Barton, the town’s wealthiest citizen -and president of the local bank, at Two Harbours, Minnesota, United States.

Mr. Barton, after putting a bullet through his daughter’s heart, shot himself through the heart, apparently not wishing to face the inquiry which his act would call forth. He left his two healthy daughters at church and drove on, telling them he was taking their sister for a drive. When he did not return a search was made and his dead body and that of his afflicted daughter were found in the car, which had been stopped by the roadside. The coroner announced that there would be no inquest. Mr. Barton lavished a fortune on his daughter, who had been an invalid since birth.
