OTIRA TUNNEL TRAFFIC

RAPID INCREASE MAINTAINED.

Christchurch, Dec. 26.

Since the Otira tunnel was opened on August 4, 1023, a total of 2,734,708 tons of goods have passed through it from west to east. This has comprised mostly coal, timber and dairy produce. The total for 1929 has reached a new high level, 581,216 tons being brought through, representing an increase of 44,678 tons on the preceding year. Each year since tho tunnel was opened 88,171 tons were hauled through. For its first complete year, 1924, 302,044 tons passed through, and for the following, years the totals were as follow: —1925, 354,867 tons; 1926, 421,906 tons; 1927, 499;996 tons; 1928, 536,538 tons; 1929, 531,216 tons.

These figures give proof of the success of the Alidland line and of the Otira tunnel, which was designed, to carry a maximum of 1000 tons a day, but which during alm'ost the whole of tho year has carried over 2000 tons daily. There has been little to interrupt traffic during 1929, the most serious trouble being the subsidence in the line caused by the earthquake of June 17. This; however, was repaired within two days and traffic -,Tvas sooir normal again.
