THE GRAND NATIONAL.

NEW CONDITIONS MADE.

WILL THEY LIMIT THE FIELD.

(Special to News—By Centaur.)

London, Nov. 14.

One of the best recruits to hurdling this year is likely to be Air. Somerville Tattersall’s colt 'Engelberg; who earned himself a bad name on the flat through his penchant for “getting left” at the post. In this respect—and I believe I have mentioned the fact before —Air. Tattersall had ® most vexatious season. For, apart from Engelberg, he had another colt, in Winton, who positively refused to start in certain races which were a “gift” for him. That was the story as far aS it went at one time. But in the autumn it was supplemented by the filly, Nuwara Eliya, who began to do exactly the same as her stable companions Winton and Engelberg. It is estimated that Mr. Tatersall lest about £5OOO in prize money because of the idiosyncrasies of these three three-years-olds, and I certainly can remember nothing like it in the history of racing. Engelberg is now in the hands of “Jim” Bell at Epsom. Ho is a past-master in the art of reforming horses, and it will be most interesting to see how he shapes with Engelberg, who has all the makings of a very fine hurdler. Yet Bell had The Wheedler last year, and could not cure him of his waywardness, and other wilful horses have in the past proved equally intractable. Bell, of. course, will miss the right hand services of that fine jockey, George Duller, this year, for the rider that was is now a trainer on his own account. Not long ago I talked at length of the changes that were necessary in the conditions of the Grand National, and it is, therefore, a pleasant task to be able to set out. the entry clauses, as they are likely to be in the futuie. I take them from the official statement of the clerk of the course at Liverpool, Mr. E. A. C. Top ham. “The Grand National Steeplechase (handicap) of lOsovs. each, 50 sovs extra if left in after January 28, an additional 25 sovs if left in after Alarch 11, and 15 sovs extra for starters, with 5000 sovs (including a trophy value 150 sovs) added; for five-year-olds and upwards; second, to receive 800 sovs, third 500 sovs; and the fourth 200 sovs, from the stakes; for horses that have been placed first, second, third, or fourth (by the judge) in steeplechases of three miles and upwards value 200 sovs to the winner; or in steeplechases of any distance at Liverpool; or winners of any steeplechase value 500 sovs (selling races in every case excepted). Weights publised January 23 at noon; the highest weight not more than I.2st 71b ami the lowest weight not less than lOst Grand National course, about four miles and eight hundred and fifty-six yards. Upon the very first casual reflection I came to the conclusion that these conditions are still not stringent enough. It will be very easy for any horse to “qualify” on the terms as they now stand, and of the 06 that ran last year I am sure —speaking at random that 50 of them would have got through on their records. That is not good enough. If the conditions are to be really severe, let it be set about now. To my way of thinking the race will not be in the least helped by the revisions suggested.
