SIDELIGHTS ON THE RACING.

HABIT BEATS HOT FAVOURITE.

(By Wire —Special to News.) Palmerston N., Last Night.

A hot favourite in Equitant was beaten by another first day winner, Habit, in the Junction Plate. These two and Just an Idea, which filled third berth, were the only once backed. Equitant, Habit and Catherine of Aragon were the best beginners, and at the end of a furlong the order was Equitant, Habit, Royal Routine, Catherine of Aragon and Just an Idea. The leaders were still undisturbed at the distance, where they drew away for Habit to •win by a neck, with Just an Idea four lengths away. Quinola was fourth and Catherine of Aragon and Bay Acre next.

VINELLA WINS THE HURDLES. ■ :!

Aurora’ Borealis won so impressively the first day that he was elected favourite for the Second Hack Hurdles, but he. failed top reach’ Vinella' in the dash to the finishing line. Borsalene again rushed to the front/ and over the

first fence the order was Borsalene, Vinella, Call Again, Skyrider and Calculation. Passing the stand Calculation was up behinS the leader, with Vinella and Call Again next and the favourite some lengths in the rear. Entering the back Borsalene and Four. Aces were four lengths in front of Call Again and Vinella. The favourite then began to gather his field and into the straight was behind Vinella and Skyrider. This was the order over the last fence, and although Aurora Borealis at once issued a strong challenge Vinella.responded and lasted long enough to-win by threequarters of a. length. Skyrider was tiring and finished a length back. Call Again, second favourite, was .fourth, and Borsalene, Calculation and Four Aces were next.

OTAIRI AGAIN SCORES. First Acre was always favourite for the Aidworth Stakes, and Silver Paper and Otairj were heavily backed. The public’s anticipation in this respect was rather difficult to assess, .for Otairi ran a really, good race in the Marton Cup. Avro and Otairi led the field of six along the straight, and running to the back the order was Otairi, First Acre, Avro, Keddar, Hoylake, and Silver Paper. At the half-mile Avro, Keddar - and First Acre were close behind Otairi, who led Hoylake, Keddar and First Acre in a bunch into the straight. Otairi drew away at the half-distance, closely pursued by Silver Paper, who at this stage was given a good chance, but the Riccarton gelding was stopping a few yards from the post and was lucky to hold off the favourite by a short half length for second. Otairi beat him by a length and a half and Keddar was tailed off. Avro. and Hoylake finished together. POOR START MARS RACE.

The Electric Hack Handicap was marred by an Indian file start in which Patearoa, Marica, Glenrossie and Warfille received all the advantage, while Fine Acre and the favourite, Statuary, were not in line when the starter pulled, the release and were both badly left. The winner, Limosin, did not get away .too well and his narrow defeat of Patearoa was distinctly creditable.' At the half-mile the leading quartette were away in front, with Limosin, Goldlike and Spearform in the next bunch. Limosin put on the pace on the turn and into the straight the order was Patearoa, Glenrossie, Marica and Limosin. The last-named battled on to beat Patearoa by a long head, with Glenrossie a further four lengths in the rear. Next to finish were Statuary, Phastar, Goldlike, Valina and Fine Acre.

ASPIRING WINS TELEGRAPH.

Four horses went out to contest the Telegraph Handicap, Aspiring being a slightly better favourite than Freehold. Broad Acre ran a conple of lengths be- . hind the other three, which were locked together, till half the journey was covered, when the favourite dropped half a length behind Freehold and’ The Raider. Freehold led into the straight, but Aspiring wore him down to win well by a length and a. half. Broad Acre was a similar distance away and The_ Raider was fourth.

FAVOURITE BRACKET BEATEN.

Tire favourite bracket, Brigadier Bill and Red Lane, was beaten out of a dividend by Pahu and Imperial Spark, who gave their patrons a thrill as they raced together from the distance for Pahu to win by a neck after being headed momentarily by the other Awapuni entrant. The early leaders were Brigadier Bill, Courageous, Red Lane . and Pahu. Half-way along the back Pahu went to the front, with the bracketed pair next. Into the straight Pahu showed the way to Red Lane, Imperial Spark, Some Red and Brigadier Bill. Red Lane finished four lengths behind Imperial Spark, with Brigadier Bill, Limosa and Some Red next.

HIGH FALUTIN’ SCORES EASILY.

Four others were saddled up to do battle with High Faintin’ in the Turakina Handicap, but none of them could give him a race. The public'realised the good thing and he went out at a cramped price. Roi de Vai was slow to begin and when they had -settled down the order w»e Malayan, Second Thought, Briar Root and High Faintin’. The favourite then eased up and ran behind the field till the top, where he began to make up the leeway. Once in line he quickly passed the leaders and beat Malayan by three lengths, with Second Thought a meek away. Briar Root was fourth and Roi de Vai, after leading into the straight, finished. Jfist.

ACCRA DEFEATS TEA TASTER.

A red hot order was Acora for the Farewell Hack Handicap, while Tea Taster was well backed. These two were the form horses and • they ran as expected.- Tea Taster made the running all the way into the straight, closely attended by Rule Britannia and Look Out. The favourite drew away within the distance to beat Tea Taster easily by a couple of lengths, with Acreline a similar distance-away and Look Out, Rule Britannia and Whenuatonga at the head of a long string. PERTH CUP TO COOLBARRO. By Telegraph—Press Assn-.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Perth, Jan. 2, The chief event of the Western Australian -Turf Club’s carnival was Held yesterday. It was:— - PERTH CUP. Of 2000 sovs. Two miles. COOLBARRO, 8.0 (Morley) 1 ABERGWAIN, ' 6.7 (Miller)’ 2 FLYING MISS, 7.8 (Bowler) 3 Twenty started. Won by three-quar-ters of a length. Time, 3min 25fsec.

TURF TOPICS. Mr. P. A, Findlay took Marjoram home to Bulls after the second day of the Taranaki meeting, and the Catmint gelding, who is very lame as the result of being kicked on Thursday, will not be raced at Stratford. It is bad luck to lose the services of such a useful horse just when he has struck form, but Mr. Findlay is sport enough to admit that he was lucky to win races at this time of the year under favourable track conditions, the gelding being favoured by the soft going.

■Last year Nightmarch included the Marton Cup among his victories, but it does not Iqok as if another Melbourne Cup winner is concealed among to-mor-row’s field-
