BOWLING TOURNAMENT
THE SEMI-FINAL PLAYED VICTORY FOR WESTON’S RINK. VISITING TEAMS’ CLOSE FIGHT. GAMES ON VOGELTOWN GREEN. The semi-finals were reached in the Taranaki Centre’s New Year bowling tournament, which was continued yesterday. Six teams from the sections played off and the three remaining rinks were Carter (N.P.), Weston’s (Avon) and Chittenden’s (Waitara). Weston drew Chittenden, and Carter had a bye. Weston defeated Chittenden and will play Carter in the final to-morrow morning at the Vogeltown green. The weather was perfect for play yesterday and the Vogeltown green, where the post-section play was held, was in excellent order. Some very fine bowls were seen. Results are:— (Semi-final.) Weston 17 v. Chittenden 15, Carter, a bye. There was some excellent bowling in the semi-final between Weston (Avon) and Chittenden (Waitara). Both leads time and again drew right on kitty and frequently the skips burned the head to save an otherwise impossible situation. 'At the last head Chittenden’s last bowl was the merest shade further away from kitty than Weston’s winning bowl. Weston scored 3 on the first head and at the third head was leading by 4 to I.' On the fifth head Weston lay 4 and was leading by 8 to 2. Chittenden came up and lay 4 on the seventh head, but a brace and a 3 to Weston made the score 15 to 8 at eleventh head. Another 3 points went to Chittenden on the. twelfth head and he crept up slowly till at the sixteenth head the score was 16 to 15 in Weston’s favour. A brilliant finish on the last head gave Weston a victory by the barest margin.
POST-SECTION PLAY. CARTER 17 V. OLIVER 11. Carter defeated Oliver comfortably, pulling' up well on the ’fifteenth and sixteenth heads, after being even at the fourteenth. Oliver scored by singles and at the seventh head led by 5 to 2. Carter scored 3 and 2 at the next two heads, respectively, but at the fourteenth the score was 10 all. At the fifteenth head Carter scored a 2 and at the next head a 4, leaving Oliver seven to get on the last head to win. The lead proved too much and Carter ran out an easy winner. CHITTENDEN 30 V. SPURDLE 16; Two visiting teams met when Spurdie (Inglewood) played Chittenden (Waitara). Spurdie lay 5 at the second head but Chittenden scored on the next four heads and led at the sixth head 7—5. At the ninth head Chittenden scored 6 and led 15 to Spurdie’s 6. On the fourteenth head Spurdie made a recovery and lay 4 reducing Chittenden’s lead to 8. Though Spurdie scored another 4 on the last head, Chittenden’s lead was too substantial to be affected. WESTON 16 V. J. R. HILL 15. There was a close game between Weston (Avon) and Hill, the visiting team making a fine recovery on the last three heads. Weston scored on the first three heads and led 4—o. At the sixth head Hill lay 5 and led by 7to 6. Af the ninth head Hill had a lead of 5 but’Weston lay 3 at the tenth. Hill forged ahead and. at the thirteenth head was 6 up, the score being 15 to 9.
