DISTRICT NEWS

URUTI NEWS. The final event in the calf-rearing competition was held at Uruti on Thursday, the occasion of the school children’s breaking-up. Mr. Sutton, of the Agriculture Department, judged the calves, of which there were a number, showing the keen interest the children are taking in the competitions. Mr. Alpe (chairman of the Farmers’ Union at Uruti) presented the prizes. Mr. Sutton gave a short address to the children, remarking that he was very pleased to see such interest in the calfrearing competitions. The calves he had just judged compared very favourably with the ones he had judged at the championships in New Plymouth. Lunch was provided by the .parents in the hall, and during the afternoon the children had races while the elder people played tennis. The result of the competition between the Uruti, Mt. Messenger and Muskers schools are:—

Championship Cup. —Won by Muskers school with 353 points, Uruti being second with 348 points. The winners in the Uruti school were: Ruth Oxenham, 90pts., 1; Alice Neal, 88pts., 2; Tom Lawrence, 87pts., 3; Alwyn Gibson, 83pts., 4. Muskers school: Gordon McGreggor. 91pts., 1; Tom McGreggor, 89pts., 2; Elsie McGreggor, 87pts., 3; Bill McGreggor, 86pts., 4. Mt. Messenger school: lan Herbert, 86pts., 1; Frank Herbert, 85pts., 2. The calf which was competed for for Christmas cheer for a Urenui resident, donated by Mr. G. K. Oxenham, was won by Mr. R. H. Pigott, Urenui, the winning number being 101. Master Tom Murray won the cake which was offered by the Farmers’ Union. Mr. and Mrs. C, H. Short have gone to Inglewobd for their Christmas holiday. Mr. and Mrs. G. Fulton are spending their holidays at Waitara. Mr. and Mrs. D. Rea have been spending a few days with Mrs. W.. Oxenhain.

The Rev. E. 8. Bennet has gone to Ashburton for his holidays.

Mr. D. Fulton is spending his holidays at Waitara.

Mr. and Mrs. G. Scott are spending their holiday at Oaonui.
