PATEA ATHLETIC MEETING
VERY SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. EXCITING CYCLE RACING. * Athletes from almost every province in the North Island competed at the amateur meeting at Patea yesterday when record entries and a record crowd combined to make the gathering one of the most successful yet held in the South Taranaki town. The Hawera Pipe-Band and the Patea Brass Band played during the afternoon. while several of the pipers played for the Highland dancing. At the conclusion of the meeting the trophies won were presented by the club president, Mr. P. S. Finlayson. The Wellington cyclist, C. Enchsou proved the outstanding performer, lus victory in the Cooper Cup race creating tremendous enthusiasm. Giving away a big handicap and riding from virtual scratch he had just- caught the field when a rider fell in front of him, bringing him down. He remounted, gazed at the field, which by now had a lead of 200 yardsu.and chased and caught it. One’ rider. Alp, spurted over the last lap and gained a break of 20 yards. With a paralysing burst of speed Ericsson flashed past the field and caught the leader in the straight, crossing the line with a length to spare.
