HOLIDAY TENNIS

HAWERA CLUB’S TOURNEY SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY. COURTS STAND HARD PLAY WELL. Glorious .weather conditions favoured the opening day of the Hawera Tennis Club's tournament at the club’s courts at Hawera. yesterday. Over 100 matches were played. The arrangements for the tournament were excellent and reflected great credit upon the energetic officials responsible for the tournament, headed by Mr. R. H. Lecce, president of the club, and Mr. P. O.Veale. tournament secretary. The tournament will be continued today, to-morrow and Monday, play commencing each day at fl a.m. The courts were in excellent condition and at the close of the day showed little sign<s of the gruelling wear they had experienced, the back lines particularly standing up well. A good standard of play was maintained, large numbers of the matches providing interest for the spectators. Afternoon tea arrangement's were in the hands of the ladies of the dub, who capably carried out this work. Results are: —
