• HURLY BURLY’S. GREAT-'FINISH. The Maiden Plated saw the defeat.of. a favourite in Ben Hur which, despite the fact that he had an i unfashionable; jockey aboard, was backed into -four figures. The-OpakiL gelding was never in the hunt. - The leaders out from the barrier were Good Acre, Leisure and Pari, with ’ Hurlyßurly in ' the next division.' The‘last-named was fourth crossing’ the ’ top ' and- ran' round the leaders to' lead into the straight and win as she liked by half a dozen lengths. -Kilorell ■ moved-up in the straight and, finishing‘.strongly,-. beat the well fancied Leisure by - half a length'. Rational II was ridden- verywell into fourth position, just beating Tonbridge. Hystride' turiied 'about when the. tapes, went .up. and tailed the field.

, BALLOON. .BEATS FAVOURITES. Singer, Kiriana and Nightdew (coupled with Phastar) ..were the only. defections from the Tararua Hack Handi-. cap, the favourites being Democratic, My Own and Skyrider in that order. Running along the straight the leaders were My Own, Shortly, -Democratic, Make Up and Skyrider, Balloon run-, ning off the' course' at the turn into ■ the back. 'At ' the home turn' Balloon was third and -was well in front of a bunch comprising Shortly, Make Up, Rich Harvest, Dainty Ways and Mirabilary. Democratic was moihentarily smothered, but Barry worked hard at the favourite and at the distance he appeared to have a chance to get second place, but he could not sustain the effort. . Balloon . won . comfortably by a couple of lengths, - Shortly • beating Mothplane by a short head for second place. Then came Mirabilary, Make Up, Rich Harvest, Democratic, Dainty Ways and Skyrider. The last-named was never well placed, and Make Up seemed to be anchored by the going. My Own tailed off badly over the last furlong. Mothplane riiade a good, finishing run, and another that ran a good race was Rich Harvest.

SEATOWN’S VICTORY. The Manawatu Cup was a slowly run race which was not to the advantage of the real stayers and enabled Seatown and Cashier to fight out a desperate finish on' their own. Rabbi was a pronounced favourite, and Hoylake, 'Seatown and Cashier were heavily backed. Arrow Lad and Piuthair were withdrawn. The winner was not Ja good beginner • and Courageous was also slow to get away, tailing the field. The leaders at the start were Great Charter, First Acre, Cashier, Full Mark, Rabbi and Hovlake. Seatown was then

pushed up and was quickly installed in third place. Passing the stand the first time the front divisioa comprised Great Charter, Seatown, First Acre, Cashier, Full Mark, Singleton and Rabbi. There was little change as they entered the back, but at the half-mile Seatown had headed Great Charter, the order of the others being Singleton, Cashier, First Acre, Rabbi, Full Mark and Hoylake. . Great Charter hung on till the’ straight entrance, but there cried enough and Seatown and Cashier joined issue. In a punishing finish the former, though momentarily headed 70 yards from home, got up again to win by a head, with First Acre two lengths back. Hoylake, Full Mark. Rabbi, Courageous, Singleton and Star Area finished in that order. LADY PAM GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD. Speculators restricted their wagering about the result of the two-year-old race to Princess Betty, the Lady PamMasterton bracket, and Arajean. All the others, with, the exception of Ball Dress, were at a great price. Princess Betty began best but was soon joined by Lady Pam, with. Arajean, Sea Scout and Masterton next. The leaders soon drew away and had the race to themselves., Lady Pam, vigorously ridden, beat the Awapuni filly by a couple of

lengths. Arajean '/was four length!. < further back, followed by Tripping, Ball Dress, Jacyson and Sea Scout. - HEAD SERANG PAYS .PRICE.. A good price was returned by Head Scrang - when he won the Gillies Hack Handicap from a short-priced favourite in Acora. Fernden, Cadland and Dernicd did not go out. The- favourite began smartly and piloted Noteworthy, Blue Paper, Head Scrang and Paiko along the back. Noteworthy joined Acora at the top turn with Blue Paper and Head Serang at two lengths intervals. Noteworthy quit when in the straight and Head Serang immediately drew away to beat Aco.ra by a length and a-half,* Blue Paper finishing- in > third berth a similar distance back. Noteworthy, Emotion, Oscar and Paikb were in the next bunch. . • ARROW' LAD IN GOOD/FORM. - Scratchings reduced the field in the open sprint to .six runners.. Consent was a pronounced favourite, and The Raider add Arrow Lad were well 'supported-'From-an even-despatch The Raider tore to- the front with Callarimore ; and Consent was • lying handy in second place, :Callaiihiorc.and Arrow Lad running next after an interval and Full Feather a long - way in the- rear. : Arrow , Lad ran up to The Raider at the far turn," with the favourite and Callan more together. On the home bend Gold Cure improved, ..and when Arrow Lad showed the way into the straight four of ’ the’ Others were practically -in line, with" Consent On the - inside - and Gold Cure' On ' the outside. -The last-named, however, stopped.- very quickly.* Arrow Lad lasted long enough to beat the overhauling Uallanmore by. a neck.. Consent was a poor third two. lengths, back, ■ - with-The -Raider.a further half length . away.- Full Feather was next and Gold Cure-.'last. "Consent and the' favourite had every chance. Arrow Lad made his rutl a bit too soon,- but he" was ' in great fettle . and . saw .it but. Callahiirqre’s performance ‘. was impressive and he ’is evidently , back to his best/‘ •form.“ .The others''we're well-'beaten. ' “ < • .. RUANUI SCORES EASILY. ’ ■ t Bettors showed - no? hesitancy in their preference for Ruahui as a medium of a recovery after a difficult "day, and' he pulled his supporters ’ through in good style. Macrooin and Blimp took up the beginners? roles, being followed out‘of the straight hy the favourite's Cerf and Atholspear. Entering the back Blimp. took'over the'ruhtiing, with-Mac-room, Cerf, Ruanui and Admiral Drake

at intervals and Briar Root last. Blimp, Cerf, Ruanui and Atholspear were first into the straight. Snowy Morris was in no hurry to hit the front, but once his mount was given his head he ate up the ground and won by two lengths from-Atholspear, which secured the narrowest decision over Blimp. Briar Root was • fourth and Cerf, Macroom and Admiral Drake next. ■ Ruanui won easily, and though Atholspear ran his usual solid race and Blimp also pleased, neither had a chance with him.
