OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION
THE ANNUAL MEETING HELD. Mr. H. W. Kirkby presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the New Plymouth High School Old Boys* Association last night. The thirteenth annual report stated that the social club had been satisfactorily wound up. The ball had been attended with the usual success, and a profit of £5 had been made, leaving a credit balance in this account of £lO. The committee was very pleased to note the interest being shown by the branch associations. These associations were doin<r much to keep alive the interest in the parent body. The Hawera branch, which had grown to be a very strong one, had held a successful re-union. The surf club had not been as strong as in previous years and had lost the Tabor Shield, which it had held for four years, to Opunake. The B team had given a creditable exhibition, being narrowly defeated by Fitzroy in the pennant competition. Again success liad been pronounced in the “football club. The seniors had played good football, and although .they were unlucky to lose players . through minor accidents, they were third from the top in the northern division. Tho juniors, however, had not been so successful. The association congratulated the third grade team, whicli had won the northern division and had been narrowly defeated by Stratford High School for the provincial championship. The senior cricket team had reached the final in the northern division and the two other teams had been runnersup in their divisions. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit of £l6 19s 5d in the general fund, a decrease of £l7 17s Id on last year’s figures, but this deficiency was accounted for by the discharging of accounts of the now abandoned social club, this was a non-recurring item. The proposed new rules were nearly completed and it was intended to call a special meeting during the year to deal with the question of the incoipoiation of the association. The committee had decided that it would be unwise this year to hold a re-union on a large scale, owing to the uncertainty as to the number likely to be present. Last year 1200 circulars had been sent out and only a dozen replies had been received. It was hoped that in the future members would assist the committee by replying prompt-
ly. Mr. Kirkby said the next re-union would be a jubilee one and he felt sure that outstanding success would attend that effort. A successful jubilee re-union would mean a big boost to the association. The ladies had done a vast amount of work in the arrangement and management of the ball. The secretaries had worked very hard during the year. ' Reports from the Auckland and Wellington branches were read by the delegates, Messrs. C. Fookce and C. H. Strombom, the messages suggesting alterations and improvements in the annual re-unions.
Mr. Brokenshire considered that a smoke concert should follow in conjunction with the annual meeting each year. This procedure, which had been carried out in the past, bad always proved a success.
Mr. Brokenshire’s suggestion was carried unanimously. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. F. Whitcombc; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. L. W. Lovell and Gordon Fraser; treasurer, Mr. P. F. Atkinson; joint secretaries, Messrs. F. Bead and K, F. Fookes; association delegates, Messrs, J. 11. Boon and R. G. Howell; auditor, Mr. F, Newell. The Secretaries were voted an honorarium of 2 guineas each.
