Mr. Burgess, conveyed the best wishes of the staff to Miss Allen and. to Mr. Woolford, [ icbaiioi.t-r, who is leaving to ente« the Auckland Training Col lege.

Air. Burgess expressed himself as well pleased with the work done during the year by the staff and scholars and lamented the fact that the end of the year meant the loss of several senior pupils. The year 1929, he said, had been an exceptional one in the history of the Opunako District High School as it had marked the commencement of manual and commercial classes and the laying of a very fine playing area sufficient for two tennis courts in summer and a basketball ground in winter. A great deal of the progress made in tho laying of the new high school grounds was due to the industry of the children, who had voluntarily given a great deal of their spare time to this end. Finally this year had seen the publication of the first issue of the school magazine, the “Opunakean.”

Air. Burgess presented Mary McLellan with a higher leaving certificate and proficiency certificates to Form 11. pupils. He impressed on those pupils who were leaving, the necessity of ever keeping in view some definite aim in life and he hoped that they would carry out the ideals of their old school.

To those three pupils desiring to enter the teaching profession best wishes were extended. These three make a total of six teachers from the school. Three of them were completing their training at colleges. In the afternoon a farewell function was tendered Miss Allan at the primary department. The teachers and pupils presented her with a handbag, expressive of the high place she held in their affections, . '
