ALLEGATION OF BURGLARY

SMART CAPTURE OF YOUTHS

CONSTABLE’S GOOD WORK.

CRIMES TO BE CLEARED UP.

By Telegraph.—Press Association,

Christchurch, December 19.

The capture of the two alleged burglars yesterday, James Wilfrid Gray, aged 18, and Charles Robert Gray, aged 17, was due to Constable Albert Gillum, a young officer only recently from the police training school. It was stated by a prominent official that he “showed courage, intelligence and determination, and effected a singularly smart capture.” Constable Gillum first caught one man in a right-of-way, handcuffed him, and then awaited the second man, who was, it is alleged, armed. He surpriseci ‘him and made a sudden arrest, taking both to the police station.

It is stated that the arrests will result in the clearing-up of a number off sensational burglaries and incendiary fires which occurred in Christchurch in July and August last. These included the fire at Bing, Harris and Co., causing £23,000 damage, and the fire at Brown and Co.’s oil store. New evidence is also said to be available in regard to the; shooting of Edward Hammond, of Ham-, moud and Turner, in July last.
