SPORTS AND SCHOOL WORK
POSITION AT CENTRAL SCHOOL. WITHDREW FROM. COMPETITIONS. “Of football and basketball we have little to report, as we withdrew from the competitions early in the season,” said Mr. D. P. Evans, headmaster, at the breaking-rp. ceremony of the New Plymouth Central school yesterday. “No less than 10 teams were entered in the different grades, but so seriously was the school work being interrupted that we found it necessary to withdraw from our engagements. “As is well known, our playground facilities ar© totally inadequate for so large a school, hence playing practice for-so many teams is practically impossible. Until the controlling authorities can arrange to accept fewer entries we propose to carry on as wo did this year. “In my opinion school games, particularly competition games, should not be allowed to interfere with tho general routine of school work. One and a-quar-ter hours out of 25 ar© compulsorily devoted to physical exercises and organ-, ised games, so wo have no time for further encroachment on tho subjects of the scho . programme. Th© physical well-being of our scholars is of primary importance, though we recognise that c< petitivo games with other schools have a definite value.”
