TARURUTANGI SCHOOL
END OF YEAR GATHERING. , “ ' CERTIFICATES PRESENTED. The annua] breaking-up ceremony, of the Tarurutangi school took the form of a euchre party and dance in the public hall last night when, despite rainy weather, there was a fair attendance. During the evening certificates won in the boys’ and girls’ club competitions and awards for swimming and attendance were presented by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., chairman of the Taranaki Education Board.
Following a number of dances fbr.TS which the ”nu6ic was provided by local.jpianista, supper was served by an ener- p getie committee of. ladies who were mainly responsible for the success of ~ the gathering. -’•’’’/i The chairman of the school commit- , tee (Mr. 0. Olds) complimented the J teacher, Mrs. Deighton, on having ob-J® tained such good examination results. > Of the pupils in the sixth standard all j. obtained proficiency certificates except .. two, who won competencies. Mr. Smith said the teachers’ task today was not an easy one as the syllabus was so crowded. He congratulated, ® Mrs. Deighton on what she had accom-. plished. He pointed out that often it..; was the plodder rather than the school § prize-winners who won success in life. , Mr. Smith then presented Christmas Ti gift books to every child and attendance certificates to the following: E. J. ! ,.J Baldock (who had not been absent once'?’' during 4J years), J. L. Deighton,, V. ' M. Longstaff and T. N. Deighton. The-;; following reseived swimming certificates:. George Amor, 880 yards; Vera Longstaff, 220 yards; Walter . 50 yards. Referring to the fact that one of ’ the children would’"go into standard 3 next year at the age of eight and thaij, other children were below the age fqr their classes, Mr. Smith this fact reflected very great credit on the teacher. The average age was equal •"< if not better than anything in the . cities. 1 , i*--; Mr. R. G? Ridling, senior, agricultural instructor, said it was remarkable that k seven certificates should come to Tarn- _ rutangi this year, although only 12 tries had been judged. In Taranaki this year 1250 children had entered for the',;-' boys’ and girls’ club competitions. The movement had grown very much ing the past few years. Thanks to the interest of the parents, teachers and > children, exceptional progress had been--made in this province, so much in fact that the Minister ,of Education had the other day held up the Taranaki district ;? as a'model. The educational author!-"j; ties could do nothing without the support of the parents and teachers, andnothing but hard work and interest would "make the movement the success I it deserved. One very important was that it encouraged the children to ’;' take a real interest in farming pursuits and thus encouraged them to remain in' the country. ’ Agricultural certificates and were then presented by Mr.'Smith asvj follow:— ‘ Condition competition. —Jeroey-AyjWg ehire: Group 3, James Dobson 2. horn-Friesian; Violet Dobson 2, Walter • Rowlands 3. Dairy type competition.—Jersey-Ayr- , shire: Ethel Street- 1, Ben Dixon Shorthorn-Fricsian: Walter Rowlands 1,-;/ Violet Dobson 2. Mr. Old handed to Mr. Ridling the sum of 23s collected in the district for 1 the funds of the boys’ and girls’ club executive. ; Mr. Ridling said this was a very come surprise indeed, for though the work was supported by subsidies and public subscription, the executive nearly always short of funds. On behalf of the girls and boys the sixth standard, Miss Vera kong-tg| staff and George Amor made tations to Mrs. Deighton, who suitably^. replied.- . -V-Sl
