FITZROY METHODIST CHURCH

CONGREGATION’S MEETING. . The annual meeting of the congregation of the Fitzroy Methodist Church was held last night, when there was a good attendance. ° The financial statement for the past twelve months was referred to by the chairman, the Rev, R. B. Gosnell. It showed that the trust funds of the church were in a healthy condition. The terms of the deed of eale of the parsonage in Richmond Street were being adhered to by the purchaser and the obligations on the present parsonage at Paynter’s Avenue had all been met as they fell due. The church and Sunday school had been painted and certain alterations made, all without incurring any further debt, and >. the liability on the Bible Class room had been paid, leaving all the church and Sunday school property entirely free from debt. The excellent state of affairs was due to the splendid and faithful work of the ladies’ guild coupled with the judgment shown by the church trustees in their ’ transactions. The debit on current expenses at the end of the financial year was 52, but early in the current year the ladies’ guild made a further donation of £4O. Thus the trust will commence the year with a debit of but £l2.

In all the church had raised during the year the sum of nearly £450, and this reflected great credit upon the church members, and in particular upon Mr. H. Hall, who still continued to render valuable service in hie usual cheerful and faithful manner. Special mention was made of the help received from the mother church (Whiteley Memorial), thus .making it possible for the Fitzroy end of the circuit to do its work.

The 'Rev. R. B. Gosnell expressed thanks on behalf of Mrs. Gosnell and himself for the loyal support rendered during , the year. “It has been a trying year,” said Mr. Gosnell, “for sickness has been most prevalent in the homes of our church people and death has not been absent. We have to mourn the loss of one of our oldest members, Mr. 8. Rundle, and extend our sympathy to his relatives. This we do also to Mrs. Hall and family, Mr. Orr, and to the relatives of the late Mr. G. Goldsworthy. The report showed the excellent work done by the choir under Mr. E. Holden as conductor and Mr. W. Holder, organist. Reference was made to the splendid Sunday school work by Mr. G.’ Tuffery, superintendent and a staff of faithful and able teachers. “In the infant department l alone,” said the chairman, “we have over 80 scholars on the roll and our great need in Sunday school work is for more teachers.”

The following were appointed church stewards for the year: Messrs. H. Hall, H. Erb, G. Tuffery, A. Huse and R. Hall. Mrs. Vickers and Mrs. Bouncell were appointed congregational representatives.

A concert programme arranged by Mrs. A. B. Macdonald was presented during the evening, every item being warmly appreciated. The performers included the Aoelian Quartette, Mrs. Macdonald (song), Mrs. Ferry (song), Mr. A; B. Macdonald (song), Mr. J. Benson (song), Mr. L. Kerr (song), Mr. Frank Syme (violin solo), Miss G. Jemison (recitation), Miss Horner (pianoforte solo). Miss Horner played.the accompaniments. At tho close of the concert the performers were thanked by the chairman and entertained at eupper by the ladiefi of the church.
