BRITISH TRADE

DELAYED TOO LONG. BRITAIN WAKING UP.’ Auckland, December 16. The necessity for a personal investigation of colonial markets is now being fully realised by English manufacturers, according to Mr. W. L. Chance, head of Chance Brothers and Company, the oldest glass manufacturing firm in England, who arrived by the Niagara to-day on a business trip. *We have sat back far too long and allowed foreign competitors to capture our own Empire trade,” Mr. Chance said. “England, is now adopting progressive business methods, and thinking far more on lines of Imperial "trade.”

New Zealand had always been regarded as a quality market by English manufacturers, Mr. Chance continued? For its size the Dominion was one of the best markets in the world. However, this market had :been neglected by England in the past, and much lost ground had to be regained. : English manufacturers were .keen to . meet all requirements of the market in an effort to expand their trade. Mr. Chance’s firm has specialised since its foundation in 1824 in the erection and equipment of lighthouses, and has provided lighting equipment for most of the lights and beacons on the i\ew Zealand coast.

Mr. Chance will remain in Auckland for several days before going to Christchurch with friends. He hopes to return early in the New Year. He is accompanied by Mrs. Chance, and altogether they will spend six weeks in New Zealand.
