GEOLOGISTS IN ANTARCTICA
CARMEN LAND EXPLORATION. IMPORTANT RESULTS EXPECTED. By Russel Owen—Special to Press Assn. Bay of Dec. 15. The geological party in the Queen Maud Range were held in their tents yesterday by an eight-inch snowfall. Mr. Gould reports that the cache laid down by Commander Byrd on the first flight in the mountains was found on Thursday and the goods in it gave them a good margin of safety for which they are grateful.' Strong winds near the mountains had blown things about to some extent.
The belief that Carmen Land is not what has been shown on the map as the result of observations and studies of photographs made on the two southern flights makes this part of Mr. Gould’s trip very important, and he hopes to be able to learn something definite about the land in that direction before starting back. “Much cloudiness interferes with our work,” he says in a message to Commander Byrd, “You surely made the polar flight at the right time; there have been very few good flying days in December.”
