EGMONT RACES TO-DAY

SPLENDID FIELDS AT HAWERA CUP CANDIDATES BEST FOR YEARS. TOPWEIGHTS FAVOURED. RECENT WINNING FORM REVIEWED (By “Mbturoa.”) To-day will prove whether the bold move of the Egmont Racing Club in changing its racing datesCis justified, and. sportspeople. of' Taranaki wish the club success. As far .as owners and trainers are concerned' the change of dates has been welconied and. has resulted in a larger acceptance of better class horses. In no small measure the splendid acceptance is due ’ to the judicious handicapping of Air. Bert Coyle, but he lias not disclosed niany winners for tire public, and the even fields promise to keep the judge, Mr. W. P. Russell, on the qui vive. • With’ President J. Gray heading a .popular committee and Mr. E; P. Cox handling. the' secretarial /reins, visitors are assured of a good time. The good class bf ’’ horses engaged promise sport that will be worth going a long way to see. - - < ’ ‘ . • \s' ; ’ The first race, • which-starts at 11.45 a.ni., is • the , - .- .

Brigadier Bill has- not been seen in winning vein since he,, scored at Wellington nearly, two months ago, and his form has not been impressive since then. However, .he is . partial to this course and may run'kindly. . Horomea ian a . great second to Elysianor at Feilding, and this good mare races consistently.. Vivo would heed to improve on her recent displays, but -Novar and Atareria ran good races at Feilding. Of the others Bonliomme makes most appeal and many remembering his good wins in Sydney a few months.ago are wondering what he is doing on the minimum. At this stage Horomea and. Brigadier Bill are most discussed, but a reproduction of Bonhomme’s Sydney form would have the topweights scratching. ...

JUVENILE HANDICAP. Of 180 sovs. Five furlongs. .(Race starts at 12.30 p.m.)

Clever beat..some good performers when she won at Feilding with 8.2, arid the Lowry cast-off’ does: riot appear to be Badly treated with 9.3 to-day. There was no mistaking Hunting Day’s win at that meeting, and the . well-bred Hunting Song colt with eight pounds the better of the weights has many admirers. The Moore bracket, .Valpre. and Isa, will be well supported, many depending upon Isa to carry them through. Just an Idea ran a. fair race at Waverley. The actual favourites promise to be Hunting Day, Clever and the bracket.

TOKAORA HACK HANDICAP. Of 170 sovs; Six furlongs. (Race starts at 1.15 p.m.

Clever makes ’her second appearance here and will probably prefer this race to the juvenile event. Just So beat a good sort in/Acord at her last start, and this richly related mare is speedy over a short course. Fernden was the best of the hacks, racing at Waverley, and if the Redfern gelding has improved since then he.must.be accounted a promising candidate,, Of those down in the list Statuary. and Roman Pearl are a pair who must appeal, but at this juncture opinion is divided between Clever, Just So and Fernden.

.. EGMONT CUP. Of GOO sovs. One and a-quarter miles. . - . (Race starts at 2 p.m.)

Star Stranger’s recent efforts have given promise of his coming, back to form, and the holder of the Australasian two-mile record is a class horse. The

long straight at Hawera should give him an opportunity to unfold one of his brilliant finishing efforts. Rabbi rules the favourite for the race, but as he has been suffering from a festered corn and has not been worked very hard since Feilding he may not be ready to show his best. However, his form at Feilding

was first-class and he should not be far away at the finish. Paganelli does not appear as one likely to go ten furlongs, especially with the track on the soft side, but his pace in the early stages of the race will give the true stayers a chance to show up at the finish. Concentrate is expected by many to show a big improvement on his Riccarton form, and he must run well to warrant support at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Bright Glow has been working exceptionally well and is expected to perform better than at his last start, but the writer opines that she will not be ready to show her best until the New Year. Star Area will be passed over in preference to.i Seatown, who need only to reproduce his Trentham form to be in the money. First Acre can never be disregarded and The Hawk and Yoma (last year’s winner) will like the sting out of the going. Merry Mint raced well enough at Woodville to suggest that he is nearly at the top of his form, and 7.8 is a handy weight. Spearmiss has failed to run up to her New Zealand Cup form, but she stays on well. Le Choucas has more friends than Hipo, though the old chap won here last year. In what promises to be an exceptionally good betting race, the final bell will probably see the public strongly in favour of Star Stranger, Rabbi and. Seatown.

FLYING HANDICAP. Of 250 sovs. Six l furlongs. (Race starts at 2.45 p.m.

Cimabue is a powerful horse, equally good in any going, and with Roy Reed in the saddle to-day Paganelli’s latest vanquisher makes a strong appeal, even with a burden of 9.8. on his back. Tara-

naki sportsmen stick loyally to Lady Quex, and her good track work and recent win at Takapuna point to her being in rare fettle. Havering, if right, would warrant consideration, and Goshawk must be coming back to form with his racing. However, Ellerslie next Week may find him at his best. Gold Dawn lias attracted notice lately with her good track gallops, and if the going is heavy to-day she will be assisted with her light impost. Llanore will have local support. Oration galloped well yesterday morning. He is unreliable, however, and Knightlike, who ran two good races at Woodville, may have more admirers. In this select field it would occasion no surprise to see the public favouring Cimabue, Gold Dawn and Lady Quex. . NOLAN GOLD CUP. Of 300 sovs. Eight and a-half furlongs.

Dolomite, a winner in open company over ten’ furlongs at Riccarton last month, commands considerable attention, and in the light of his win fi e does not appear to be overweighted with 9.3. Juggle has also won in open company, but the distance might have her scratch-, ing. Austerity will be passed over in preference to the Corry bracket, Make Up and. Imatc'agirl, both of' whom have been racing consistently in hack company this season. Pompeius, Democratic, Spring Abbey and Waitaunaha are hunters possessing unusual pace, but of the quartette Democratic has the best credentials. Qhopin has featured prominently throughout the season and he has been finishing on in his races. Skyrider and Latakia will not be neglected, but in the absence of Dolomite the public will probably make favourites the bracketed pair and Chopin.

WHAREROA HANDICAP. Of 200 sovs. Eight and a-half furlongs. (Race starts at 4.15 p.m.)

Manly has disappointed on several occasions this season, but his track work at New Plymouth has been attractive, and perhaps the Archiestown gelding will do better to-day. Mint Leaf is miles below his best form, but Orazone should be improved with her race at Waverley. Mithra has been bowling along in great style at Takanini, and he ran a good race the second day at Takapuna. Macroom 'is not up to scratch this, season. The improving Rory Mor promises to give trouble; The money will probably favour Mithra and Manly.

WAIPAPA HACK HANDICAP. Of 170 sovs. Seven furlongs. (Race starts at 5 p.m.)

There is a distinct possibility of Make Up foregoing his engagement in the Nolan Cup, leaving the stable to rely upon Imateagirl, and if the Surveyor gelding takes his place here he will .come in for solid support. Fernden showed pace and determination at Waverley, and if he starts in this race he will not lack followers. In the absence of. the topweights the field will be seriously weakened, but betting will take a wjde range and Monaloff, Singer and Calamine will probably be the elect of the public.'

TO-DAY’S RIDING ENGAGESIENTS. Reported riding engagements for to--'day are: — R. Reed. —Hunting Day, Star Stranger, Cimabue. L. J. Ellis. —Rabbi, Gold Dawn. B. H. Morris.—Clever, Concentrate. K. Voitre.—Merry Mint, Llanore. W. H. Jones. —Hipo, Oration, Mint Leaf. H. N. Wiggins. —Havering, Chopin, Monoloff. C. Goldsbro. —Waitaunaha, Flying Shot, Singer. H. K. Alexander. —Manly. H. Goldfinch. —Paganelli.

TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. ARRANGEMENTS FOR MEETING. xAt the special meting of the committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club/ast night to make the final arrangements for the Christmas meeting' there were present: Messrs. L. A. Nolan (chairman), W. T. Hookham, J. Scanlon, A. R. Standish, W. P. Nicoll and W. C. Weston. Two new members were elected. The transfer of ownership of the horse Huntingdon in the Taranaki Stakes was approved. The Tourist League was granted £5, and it was decided to vote £2 towards the amateur athletic sports club “popular man competition.” The appointment of stewards for the meeting was arranged, and other matters relating to the meeting were discussed. The secretary reported that numerous inquiries had been forthcoming from all quarters regarding the Christmas meeting, and if the interest being taken in the fixture could be taken as any criterion, success could be assured for the gathering on Boxing Day and December 27.

The weights for all first day’s events are due to make their appearance tomorrow, and the acceptances close with the secretary, Mr. C. B. Webster, on Friday evening.

NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK GALLOPS. FINAL TRIALS STAGED FOR HAWERA (By '‘Moturoa.”) A stiff north-west wind hindered training operations at New Plymouth yesterday morning when the Hawera candidates were given their final gallops. In spite of the adverse conditions, the tracks were in great order and exceptionally good times were recorded. R. Barlow’s team were worked early, Melissa and Flying Shot being allotted good working gallops. . Melissa is not racing the first day, but if reasonably handicapped will make her appearance to-morrow. The Swell and Bonogne cut out half amile on the plough in 52isec. Quillfire was given steady pace work. Desbroney (Alexander) and Belle Star (Johnson) ran in the last three furlongs of a circuit. This pair, with Miss Chatter and Monoie, were later given barrier practice.

An interesting trial, was staged between Manly (Alexander), Singer (Goldsbro) and Whenuanui (Drinkwater) over six furlongs. Whenuanui secured the beet of the etart; from Singer and at the end of a furlong the pair were three lengths ahead of ManJjjf. Singer had headed Whenuanui at the High School bend —the pair having coverecj/the first half mile in 52sec., • a smart /effort against the wind. With two furlongs to go Manly began to gather the leaders in and finished on brilliantly to pass the post five lengths ahead of Singer with Whenuanui three lengths further back. The time, Imin. 19sec., was not a bad effort on the plough. Manly has never looked better than he is at present. Horomea (Johnson) covered two circuits on the plough at a steady half pace. She looks muscular, and is in fine fettle, Peg Black was also given steady work. She has fined down considerably since she raced at Waverley. Omeo stepped out freely on the plough. SPEED MERCHANTS IN ACTION.' The two-year-old Orapai (Drinkwater) was responsible for an attractive effort when he scampered down from the halfmile peg on the trial grass in 50 2-ssec. Orapai had the advantage of a length ovex the maiden Espion at the start and maintained his lead to the post. Espion went very well, too, and might run better than many expect to-morrow. Gold Dawn (Drinkwater) cantered a round on . the inner grass and then jumped away from the five furlong post on the trial alone. Recording little worse than 12sec. to the furlong, she ran the first three furlongs in 36 l-ssec., and completed her task in Imin. 13-5 sec. It was a great effort considering she had nothing to help her home and the gallop was equal in value to Lady Quex’ five on the course proper. Hipo (George) and Rotokare (Goldsbro) hopped off from the seven furlong post, Hipo showing the way around the turn and down the back. Rotokare hung on well and finished on better than the veteran to pass the post half a length to the good in Imin. 33 3-ssec. In running five furlongs on the course proper in 60 3-ssec., Lady Quex registered the best trial she has ever done. Ridden by Goldsbro, she moved away on the rails with Oration (George). The Cicero horse had a slight advantage down the back and across the top, but the mare closed up on him two furlongs from home, and finished resolutely to pass the post a length and ahalf to the good of her companion. Lady Quex 'had the benefit of about ten pounds in weight, and as Oration meets her on 33 pounds better terms to-day, the black horse cannot be despised.
