BRAWN OR BRAINS.

BUTCHER v. JOURNALIST. (By “Moturda.”) , The chairman of directors of a little country newspaper was the local butcher, and as a business man he had few equals in the village. But his ideas of journalism were somewhat original, and he used the full force o-f his share holding in the concern to steer the literary leanings of the ‘‘rag.” The result was that the staff was an ever-changing one, the butcher versus journalist wrangle being of almost weekly occurrence. Fitz-Jones, a prominent sporting writer, who had “flopped” through over-in-dulgence in the cup that cheers, thereby losing a decent billet on a weekly, joined up with the local “Roarer,” and proceeded to rattle off breezy sporting articles which were too straightforward and personal to suit the taste of certain racing folk, the butcher (himself a horseowner) included. Fitz-Jones was promptly carpeted by the directorate, the man of brawn being in the chair. Proceedings were short and to the point. “Fitz-Jones,” the butcher said, “your services are dispensed with.” “For what reason?” inquired the sporting man. “Well, er—” began the chairman, “I, er —don’t like the articles you are turning out, that’s all.” “Oh, don’t you,” replied Fitz-Jones, "well, now that I come to think of it, I’m darned if I like your sausages either; so, good morning and goodbye!” Needless to say, the moral of this story was wasted on the. butcher.
