YULETIDE IN CHINA.
GIANT XMAS TREES.' . All children know that to have a Christ* . mas Tree is customary in all the northern European countries. In China, also, the popularity of the Christmas Tree has been in* creasing rapidly in recent years. Thanks to tho Y.M.C.A., whose membership m very large throughout China, Christmas trees of giant! size are now frequently erected in publrn squares or market places in many Chines® cities. Lavishly illuminated with multi-col-oured electric lamps they form an irresistible attraction io thousands of non-Christian Chin-, cso children, who gather round . them on Christmas Eve and listen in stolid wonderment io tho carols sung by their converted brothers and sisters. Tho celebrations, how-, ever, are sometimes fraught with danger, for tho Christian Chinese are still subjected to considerable persecution at tho hands of the less enlightened members of the community. , On several occasions it has been recorded that the ceremony of “peace and goodwill; has terminated in a free fight, when there has been little of the meek spirit of tho martyr to- be observed in the Christian you . of the new Cathay.
