FANGY DRESS BALL.

Despite the inclement weather, the Okoko hall was crowded last Thursday evening, the occasion being the second annual plain and fancy dress ball, organised by the hall society. A good number attended in fancy dress and the judges had some difficulty in awarding tho°prizes. The hall was beautifully decorated for tho function, fern fronds, vari-coloured strcamei s and fox-gloves of many hues predominated in the main ballroom, while a simpler, but pleasing effect was carried out in the supper-room, Tho orchestral dais was the centre of attraction, and here the

decorations consisted of a cleverly worked trellis arch-way with streamers and fern fronds arranged in a pleasing effect, 'mere were visitors from many parts of Taranaki at the function, and they all had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The music was supplied by McNeill’s Novelty Jazz Band, while Messrs. A. McKeown and E. Holley carried out the duties of masters of ceremonies. Mesdames T, O’Riorden, J. Johnson, and- L. Rattenbury officiated as judges for the parade of fancy dresses, and their task was not by any means a light one. The award of prizes resulted: Ladies’ fancy, Airs. E. Holley (Dutch) first, Alias Martin (black-bird), second; poster, Mrs. M. E. Fraser (National Breaklast), first, and Miss Ldxton (Newton King’s seeds) second; original, Miss Iris Fraser (Grecian Princess) first, and Miss A. Whittaker (Union Jack) second; gent’s fancy, Mr. E. Holley (Dutch); gent’s humor-

OUS, Mr. W. Hargraves (absent-minded professor); gent’s original, Mr. Frank Whittaker (flag lieutenant). Judges’ specials were awarded to Miss A. Rattenbury (red devil), Mrs. Gainfort (early Victorian), Miss E. Whittaker (Granny Chamberlain), Mr. A. Pepperill and Mr. W. Fraser (negress and negro), Miss Doris Holley (British goods) and the

“punchinello” pair (Miss Ayton and Mr. Ron Jones). The special prizes were awarded by Mesdames T. O’Riorden, L. Rattenbury, J. Johnson, and Messrs. R. Fitzgerald and A. Jones. Others in fancy dress were:—Ladies: Mrs. G. Rogers, (Bournville cocoa); Mrs. R. Rogers (house to let), Miss Eileen Holley (day and night), Miss Sylvia Holley (Indian corn), Miss S. Hoskin (Bourneville cocoa), Miss G. R. Whittaker (Gipsy Queen). All tho men in fancy dress were included in the prize

list. Those in evening dress were: Mrs. T. Stokes (black crepe de chine), Miss L. Phillips (pink georgette), Mrs. C. Fitzgerald (geranium ring velvet), Mrs. K. Blundell (royal blue ring velvet), Mrs. G. Loveridge (moonlight taffeta), Miss E. Fleet, (green georgette), Miss G. Fitzgibbon (black satin), Miss I. Brown (apricot taffeta), Miss B. Whitehead (red crepo do chine), Miss C. Mills (flame crepe de chine), Miss E. Wells (black satin), Mrs. J. Rockett (green ring velvet), Miss E. Ayton (salmon crepe de chine), Mrs. L. Rattcnbury (black georgette), Miss Betty Hedgeman (pink rayon), Mrs. Albert Jones (pink crepe de nhinnl. Mis. W. Harsrraves (figured

rayon), Mrs. W. Wright (navy crepe de chine), Mrs. E. Whittaker (green ring velvet), Mrs. G. Houston (floral voile) and Mrs. H. Whittaker (salon moracain). A splendid supper was provided by the ladies’ committee, great credit, being due to Mesdames M. E. Fraser, E. Holley, Albert Jones, and Miss E. Whittaker, of tho hall societies executive committee, who left no stone unturned to make tho function tho brilliant success that it undoubtedly was. Extra dance numbers were played by Mi's. J. Johnson, Miss S. Hoskin and Mr. I, Davidson, and the dance was kept going until close on daylight.
