INTERESTS OF MOTORISTS
SOUTH ISLAND UNION MEETS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association
Dunedin, Last Night.
The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held. to-day. Mr. A. E. Ansell, M.P., was in the chair. The following remit was carried: That an effort be made to secure uniform prices for the wholesale and retail sale of motor spirit throughout the distribution districts.
At a later stage of the meeting the matter of petrol prices was again brought up by Mr. Halliday, and it was decided to communicate with the Department of Industries and Commerce asking it to investigate the matter.
It was resolved: “That it be made an offence under the Motor Regulations to leave broken glass or other materials on roads, such being likely to cause damage to tyres of motor vehicles. This suggestion is made with the idea of eliminating the existing practice of broken glass being left on roads, either deliberately oi- through carelessness.”
Th© executive was recommended to consider a numbering system of distinguishing main routes and to submit an estimate of the probable cost. Th© South Canterbury Association forwarded a resolution advocating that all main arterial roads should be nationalised and controlled by the Highways Board.
The chairman said he doubted whether the proposal was practicable. It was a matter for agreement between the Highways Board and the counties. It was decided to give further consideration to the matter at the next meeting. The matter of compulsory stop signals at railway crossings was discussed. These were stated to be erected at many places where they were unnecessary, and this led to carelessness. In the opinion of Mr. Ansell the policy of the Railways Department should be reviewed in this J respect, and it was decided to recommend that this be done. '
