GENERAL ITEMS. The elimination of the element of danger at the Tawhiti Road railway crossing is a subject which lias occupied the attention of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce for years, and many representations have been “made by the chamber to the Railway Department. As a result of the negotiations the assistant general manager’ of railways, Mr. M. Dennehy, visited Hawera on Friday and met a deputation from the chamber. Suggestions that a deviation from Tawhiti Road down Scott Street and across the line to Collins Street would solve the problem did not meet with the approval of the deputation, which urged that an effort should be made to remove the goods section of the track to the northern side of the station, which would obviate the necessity of shunting across the crossing. A , drop on the line at the northern end was raised as an objection by the department. After further discussion Mr. Dennehy said he was sure there was some solution to the problem, and he would consult with his engineers on the question. The matron of the Hawera public hospital acknowledges the following gifts: Magazines, Miss Sage, Margaret Simpson, Mrs. Christian, Mies Lysaght, Mrs. Brown; books, Mrs. Stubbs, Mrs. Brown, Miss Lysaght; flowers, .
