there were close finishes in the Takapuna Plate, Cambria Handicap and the Ponui Handicap. Several favourites were successful and nearly all the winners were well backed, although Kairuri and Tremetus were at good prices. Clopton was a slightly better favourite than Sea Song for the Melrose Maiden Stakes, with Alloy also heavily backed. Loving Cup and Neil received the best of the start but Sea Song soon took charge. Sea Song drew out three furlongs from home and turned into the straight clear of Loving Cup, Tuku and Nassau Lady. Nothing had a chance with Sea Song at the finish and she won very easily by four lengths Nassau Lady, who beat Mon Star by three parts, of a length. Carlaris was fourth, followed by Neil, Tuku and Alloy. The winner drew the extreme outside at the barrier and, besides showing plenty of speed, also ran on well. Nassau Lady and Mon Star finished fairly, but Loving Cup and Neil tired after having every chance. Alloy was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Kotahi was saddled and sent to the post but bled after doing his preliminary and was withdrawn, tho investments on his chance being refunded. KAIRURU SHOWS PROMISE. An outsider in Kairuri effected a big surprise in the Tiri Highweight Handicap, for which Sir Archie and Golden Wedding were best backed. Waitaunaha led early with Red Comet, Harbour View, Kairuri and Bizarro well up. The field bunched at the top, where Glcna Bay ran through fast from the rear and Quincoma also moved up. Running to the turn Waitaunaha retired and Kairuri assumed command from Glena Bay, Wcnday, Quincoma, Sir Archie and Golden Wedding. Kairuri stayed on

well and scored by two lengths from Wenday, with Glena Bay a length away third. Sir Archie was fourth, succeeded by Golden Wedding and Harbour View. The winner is an upstanding gelding by Surveyor and -was making his first public appearance. Sir Archie ran a fair race and will be improved by the run, while Golden Wedding was badly placed most of the way and failed to show her true form. Glena Bay made his run from tho rear too quickly; otherwise he would have been more troublesome. a PRINCE VAL WINS DECISIVELY. The Borough Handicap was a good betting race with Prince Vai and Refresher the best backed. Liason and Flying Prince received the best of the start, while Refresher dislodged his rider and tho outside horses, Royal Doulton and Macroom, lost a little ground. Liason, Respirator and Cynthia N were prominent early. Running across the top Liaison fell back quickly and Prince Vai joined Cyntnia N in the lead. Near the turn Prince Vai drew out and turned for home clear of Respirator, Flying Prince and Eager Rose. Prince Vai was not troubled at the finish and won easily by five lengths from Flying Prince, who defeated Eager Rose by a length and a-half. Respirator was fourth, followed by Ilipo, Thursby and Macroom. Prince Vai is good and won most decisively. Macroom and Royal Doulton ran good races considering they started so slowly. Eager Rose was a shade unlucky. Liaison bled, and was pulled up, while the. riderless Refresher was always well up and finished among the placed horses. His rider lost his scat through catching his foot in the stirrup of Flying Prince’s saddle. PRO DICE ALWAYS A WINNER. ‘ Prodice was a hot favourite for the Alison Cup, being nearly twice as well backed as In the Shade, 'Who had a slight call over True Blood. The Lover and Flying Juliet carried the field along for most of the way with Prodiee (on the rails) and Le Choucas together next, and. then True Blood. Three furlongs from home Le Choucas went up on the outside of the leaders, and shortly afterwards Flying Juliet dropped back. At tho turn Prodice camo to the outside and drew away to win with ease by four lengths from The Lover, who defeated Le Choucas by three parts of a lengtn. True Blood was fourth, followed by Transformer, In the Shade and Corinax. Prodice was always going like a winner, whereas In tho Shade was in the rear most of the way and never gave any trouble. The Lover ran one of his best races and Le Choucas went well considering that he bolted once round at a fast pace after throwing his rider when going down to do his preliminary. TREMETUS CAUSES SURPRISE. Another outsider in Tremetus turned up in tho Cambria Handicap, for which Orapai and Sight Draft were heavily backed. Tremetus and Oil King moved first and then Orapai took charge from Full Measure and Biddy’s Boy. Orapai showed the way into the straight to Full Measure, Biddy’s Boy, Tremetus and Wild Time. Orapai looked like winning below tho distance, but Tremetus finished well and beat him by a neck. Wild Time was two lengths away third and Biddy’s Boy was fourth, next coming Bells of Shandon and Sight Draft. The winner is not much to look at but gallops well. He is by Treclare, whose progeny have been racing well in Australia this season. Sight Draft drew wide out at the start and was outside several horses most of the way. LEITRIM WINS BY HALF A HEAD. Fifteen started in the Takapuna Plate and Leitrim was favourite at» a fair price, with Duellona and Vali also well backed. Bood Boy and Leitrim were first to move, Crimestor running to the front quickly to lead along the back from Leitrim, Volimond, Vali, Belle Star and Storm Fiend. The field bunched across tho top, Leitrim leading into the straight from a bunch comprising Briar Root, Tetrarchate, Vali, Volimond and Crimestor. Once they straightened up Vale issued a strong challenge and in a hot finish 116 just failed to reach Leitrim, who won by half a head. Briar Root aws two and a half lengths away third, and Tetrarchate was fourth. Next to finish were Storm Fiend and Prince of

Orange. Leitrim and Vali outclassed the others at the finish. Vali might have won with a better post position. Tetrarchato displayed considerable speed in tho middle stages and should be worth watching. Duellona was slow away and was never dangerous. NARROW DEFEAT OF TAURUA. For the Ponui Handicap Taurua was a hot favourite, with Sports King and Brampton most in demand of the others. Tarrapeen and Diamond Queen attended to the pacemaking,' with Spring Abbey and Red Lion handily placed. The field bunched at the top, Diamond Queen and Spring Abbey running on in tho lead to bo first into tho straight from Sports King, Gay Cockade, Cybele and Taurua. Spring Abbey had charge inside the distance and just lasted long enough to beat the fast finishing Taurua by a short head. Cybele was a neck away third and Gay Cockade was fourth. Then camo Brampton and Diamond Queen. Taurua was a ccrtainy beaten by sheer over-confidence on the part of Goldfinch, who delayed his effort until he got into an impossible position at the turn, where he had to come wide to get a run. Spring Abbey ran his best race to date and Cybele shaped well enough to indicate that she is returning to form. LADY QUEX NOT TROUBLED. Heavy wagering on the Cheltenham Handicap saw Lady - Quex and Vallar very solidly backed. Lucy Rose and Town Bird moved first, Town Bird and /Ridgemount carrying on tho running from Tea Time and Vallar. With three furlongs covered Lady Quex went up fast on the outside and was the leader into the straight from Town Bird, Ridgemount, Vallar and Lucy Rose. Lady Quex easily held her own in the run home and won by three lengths from Lucy Rose, who finished on. to beat Town Bird by two lengths. Ridgemount was fourth and Vallar fifth. Lady Quex' was not too well placed early but soon ran through and was not seriously troubled once she reached the front. Vallar, was restrained in . behind the leaders early and this apparently did not suit him as he failed to come on at the end. Despite his failure Vallar for the Railway Handicap. Lucy Rose is likely to be one of the early fancies finished on but few of the others ran anywhere up to form. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Takapuna acceptances for to-day are as follow: — VAUXHALL HANDICAP.

TAKAPUNA CONCLUDES TO-DAY. / (By “Moturoa.”) Sea Song won so easily on Saturday that he looks like seeing a shorter price than Nassau Lady and Red Lion. e » « * Glena Bay does not appear to have been very well handled on Saturday, and if dilferent tactics are adopted he might prove a tough opponent for Golden Wedding and Wenday. * « * * Duellona was a sad disappointment in the Takapuna Plate, but that form was not correct and she might go out a firmer favourite than Gay Cockade. « # * * Vallar should be improved by his race tho first day, and it would occasion little surprise to see him a better favourite than Leitrim. » # « # Prince Vai won so decisively on Saturday that he must be seriously considered'in the better company carded for the St. Andrew’s Handicap. Tough opponents will be Royal Doulton, who won this race last year, and Lady’s Boy. » * # * Tremetus seems to bo a fair sort, and a repetition of his form tho first day would make him preferable to Orapai and Biddy’s Boy. u o « # Vali ran such a great race in the Takapuna Plato that he seems likely to be more in demand than Taurua. The programme concludes with the open “seven.” The extra furlong would favour Lucy Rose, who ran a good race behind Lady Quex. Tho Lucullus mare promises to be more in demand than Macroom and Master Doon-
