EVERYBODY’S TALKIES. FOX MOVIETONE SPECIAL. Portraying roles which are bound to make a lasting impression on film devotees, Paul Page and Lola Lane score, tremendous triumphs in the Fox-Movie-tone production, “Speak-easy,” now showing at Everybody’s Talkies, New Plymouth. Page portrays the .role of a college-bred fight champion who is saved from degradation by the love and faith of a youthful newspaper reporter, played by Miss Lane. The two were recruited from the legitimate stage for' this alltalking picture, and are potent factors in raising the story to a high dramatic level. The supporting cast includes Henry B. Walthall, Sharon Lynn, Helen. Ware, Warren Hymer and Stuart Erwin. Benjamin Stoloff directed the photoplay. The story was adapted from the stage play of the same name by Edward Knoblock and George .Rosnor. The supporting programme presents the Movietone News (including Bobby Jones v. Espinosa in play-off for United States open golf championship), “In Holland” (alltalking comedy), Lloyd Hamilton comedy, and "Voices of Italy” (talking and singing subject). This programme will be finally presented to-morrow nignt.

PEOPLE’S TALKIES. ■ "FASHIONS IN LOVE.” ■ Music is as much a part of Victor Schertzinger as his dramatic appreciation. ‘ It is his habit to play the piano between the scenes in the pictures he direets,’ and Adolphe Menjou, acting the part of a concert pianist in his first alltalking picture, “Fashions in Love, which is now showing at the People s Talkies, New Plymouth, culled many valuable pointers from watching the director play during rest periods. • Mcnjou is himself an accomplished pianist, but he has never played on the concert stage. Schertzinger, on the other hand, won fame on the concert stage before turning to motion picture directing. These two, working together, made .“Fashions in Love.” When Menjou plays the piano in the picture, it is Menjou audiences hear and see,, but much of the routine business was i.ntioduced from S.clierizinger’B experience. Fay Compton, the famous British actress, plays the leading feminine role. The supports include M.G.M. News, “Accidental Treatment” (a screamingly funny all-talking British comedy), “The Harmony Boys” (in pleasing melodies), and “A Bird, in the Hand” (an all-talking featurette, starring Lois Wilson).
