DESERTION TO CAPITALS
BESEDOVSKY SENTENCED TO DIE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Moscow, Nov. 22. The Soviet has sentenced to death Besedovsky, an official of the Soviet Embassy in Paris in absentia on the grounds of treason and disobeying the command to return to Russia, thereby deserting to the capitalist camp.' The sentence will be carried out within 24 hours his return to Russia. Meanwhile all his property has been confiscated. A Moscow message of October 28 said that Besedovsky was to be prosecuted for theft and embezzlement. He had been making a series of disclosures in the Paris Press. Describing the manner in which the Soviet obtained the Italian secret code, he said that an Italian attache at Berlin offered the code for £lOOO to the Soviet Embassy at Paris. A Soviet official, under pretence of a desire to verify its authenticity, borrowed the book and photographed every page while the Italian waited in the next room. He then told the attache that tho Soviet had decided tiot to purchase it.
