“Do you realise that Wanganui has to find £lOO,OOO a year for interest on money borrowed by local bodies in years long past?” asked a speaker at a meeting of Durie Hill ratepayers the other evening. It was explained that the City Council had to find £60,000 and the Harbour Board the best part of £40,000 every year. Though some of the money had been borrowed for works which returned interest on the loans, others were not interest-earning. The speaker claimed that it was not fair for the city fathers to borrow so much and leave it to tlie generations of the future to foot the bill. Some of the secondary schools of the Dominion are rather jealous of the notoriety achieved by Christ’s College over the “coppering” of the collection in chapel on a recent Sunday, as a result of which the whole school was “gated” until such time as the ringleaders of the plot should own up. “It isn’t at all original,” complains a boarder at another school; “it’s been done here the last Sunday every term for the past two years —everyone puts into the collection box as many pennies or half-pen-nies as he can get.
