WANGANUI WOOL SALES

MARKET RATES MAINTAINED SALE CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY. GOOD CLEARANCE EFFECTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The first Wanganui wool sale of the 1929-30 season was held to-day, and a catalogue of 8/00 'bales was submitted to a record bench of buyers. Over 90 per cent, of the offering was sold at prices on a par with and to some extent firmer than those realised at the Wellington and Napier sales. _ The bulk of the offering went to Continental markets, Germany taking the major share. Brad for was bidding freely at reduced limits. The greate°r portion of the offering comprised wools from dry sheep and there was a reflection of the season's indifferent weather in the general appearance and condition. Compared with prices realised at clos-. ing sales last year, there was a drop manifest ranging from IJd to 3d. Fine wools were down to a greater extent than the coarser. In some instances wool_ passed at the end of last season at 15d to 16d sold yesterday at lid to 12d, this indicating a feeling on the growers’ part that the market was uncertain. Pieces and bellies met with good demand, but the small offering of early shorn lambs was hardly inquired after. Bidding . was animated and the prices, considering the quality of. the wool, were firm on those realised at Wellington and Napier. The bulk of the growers met the market and a fair proportion of those dubious at first did business afterwards at the market figure. Taken as a whole the sale must be considered entirely satisfactory on present market values. Shabby clips in some cases were dearer than anticipated.

WOOL NOT IN BEST CONDITION. LOAN AND MERCANTILE PRICES. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wanganui, Last Night. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports that its catalogue at the sale comprised 1556 bales drawn from Wanganui, the Main Trunk, Palmerston North and Taranaki districts. There was a particularly strong bench of buyers representing all the wool-consuming centres of the world' as well as Dominion mills, fellmongers and scourers. From the commencement of the sale competition was keen and prices on the whole were much on a par with those at Napier and Wellington earlier in the month with the exception of fine 50’s short hoggets, which could be quoted about 4d in the grease easier. This may be accounted for by the fact that the wool on offer at the sale was not in such good condition as at the two previous auctions. 'Hoggets in _ this district did not do too well during the winter and this was reflected in the wool, most of which had a decided break and was very tender. Owing to the broken weather, which had retarded shearing, the catalogues . were much smaller than they otherwise would have been, but should the weather take up there will no doubt be a very heavy offering on January 24, The feature of to-day’s sale was the very strong competition from the Continental section, of the buyers, while Bradford was comparatively quiet and America was practically out of the market. The Loan and Met cantile Agency sold 94 per cent, of its catalogue under the hammer and succeeded in disposing of some of the passedin lots privately. Following is the range of the firm's prices: Preston Hill: H A, 13fd per* lb; W, 121 d. MT, Zion: H AA, 12jd; H A, 124 d; W AA, 12-Jd; E AA, 12Jd. Opeke: D N, XH, lljd; B and S W, H|d. COMPARISON WITH LAST YEAR. FARMERS’ CO-OP. REALISATIONS. The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society, Ltd., report as follows: — The first Wanganui wool sale of the season 1929-30 was held yesterday before a large and representative,, bench of buyers. Approximately 8500 bales were offered, of which our catalogue comprised 1049 bales. Although the prices were about 4d per lb lower than the opening sale last year, they were fully up to those ruling at the recent sales held at Wellington and Napier, taking into consideration that at these centres most of the clips were super wools, classed and skirted. In the case of down wools the decline was from lOd to 12d per lb as compared with vanies at the opening sale last season, and at the present prices they certainly look great buying. We found that up to the limit competition was particularly keen, the Continent being by far the largest purchaser. The following are some of our realisations: — Ten PH/O, E A, 9Jd; SBT, H A, 12. SALES OF GROUP WOOLS. NEWTON KING, LTD. REPORT. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wanganui, Last Night. Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., report the offering was one suitable for the Continent men, who were the main buyers. The wool generally was not as well grown as that last season, being thin and tender and not such a good colour. The coarser wools were in most demand, and these generally brought better prices than the finer sorts, which were not wanted. An outstanding feature of the sale was the animated competition for Newton King, Ltd.’s grouped wools, which sold exceptionally well. The firm had several very attractive lots comprising in some cases as many as 84 bales in one line. This system is considered a benefit to the small growers. There was a satisfactory clearance.
