AUCKLAND HARBOUR BRIDGE
COMMISSION OPENS SITTING. ’ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Commission appointed to inquire into the question of constructing a bridge across the Waitemata Harbour opened its sittings to-day, Mr. James Marchbanks', the chairman, presiding. The Harbour Bridge Association said the preparation of its case was not completed, and urged that borings should first be taken with the money authorised by the Government, so that definite particulars of the cost could be formulated.
After a discussion, the chairman said he thought too much stress was laid on the borings by the association. The commission would attend to that matter in due course. In the meantime, it wanted information as t<s population, and so on.
Mr, F. W. Furkert, a member of the commission, said that before troubling about borings the commission should be assured that the bridge was really needed. The chairman explained that what the population wanted was population statistics, and so on. He asked if statistics and other necessary information could be ready by the end of the month. Various counsel agreed they would be ready with their share, and after further observations the chairman said the commission would adjourn to inspect the suggested sites, and some of the adjacent districts. It would sit again tomorrow morning, when any witnesses who wished to give evidence would be heard. It would return to Wellington at the week-end, and come back to Auckland at the end of the month.
