HONOUR WINS DERBY

BIG RACES TO TOXEUMA AND RABBI TROTTING AT ADDINGTON TO-DAY NEW ZEALAND CUP HEATS TO DECIDE As expected by the majority, Honour had little difficulty in ' taking the blue ribbon at Riccarton yesterday, and scored decisively from a weak field after leading all the way. Count Palatine filled second place, with Eaglet a fair thirdThe consistent Toxeuma, following his forward racing at Wellington, won the Criterion Handicap and Rabbi, whose form has been good, did not create a surprise by winning the Metropolitan Handicap from Spearmiss and Concentrate. To-day all eyes will be centred' on, Addington, where the New Zealand Trotting Cup carnival opens'. ’ The piece de resistance ot the programme will be the £4OOO a venture has never been previously entertained at the pacing and this year s race finds a considerable restriction in the class of horses engaged, thus ensuring that only the tested and best class horses will be eligible to compete. The cup will be run in two heats and a final, the heats being decided to-day, while other rich prizes to be competed for on today’s programme will be the Dominion. Handicap, of £lOOO, and altogether £4850 will be distributed in prize money to-day.

The conditions were unpleasant for the second day of the C.J.C. meeting. It was a dull day with a cold easterly wind. The attendance was above the usual Derby Day standard, though falling short of Saturday’s crowd, and this was reflected in the increased totalisator figures. Honour scored a decisive win in the Derby, while Rabbi won the Metropolitan Handicap very easily, but most of the other races provided interesting contests.

KAPUNA’S IMPROVEMENT. The opening event, the Middleton Hurdles, attracted a field of ten, including several newcomers, among whom was Glengariff, who wag always favourite. Goldtown, Pangolin and Gala Day led past the stand in line. Then Pangolin and Gala Day went on together, but Gala Day fell at Cutt?’ hurdle, interfering with Novar, who dropped back to last. Pangolin led Goldtown past the mile post with Oriflamb, Amorist, Kapuna and -Tresham handy. Goldtown was done with at the home turn, where Pangolin had Kapuna and Oriflamb as his .nearest, attendants. They ran like ■ this to the last hurdle, Kapuna wore Pangolin down to win comfortably by a neck. Oriflamb was three lengths away with Amorist and Treeham next. Glengariff fell at the last hurdle. Kapuna’s form was a great improvement on his first day effort. Pangolin registered another good performance. TOXEUMA FINISHES STRONGLY. Toxeuma and Havering disputed favouritism! in the Criterion Handicap. Cimabue and Meadow Lark were smartest out but Great Star was in front after going a little way with Meadow Lark, Toxeuma, Arrow Lad and Cimabue in the next bunch. There was not much change to the home turn, ‘ where Hunting Cry and Royal Saxon were also going well. Great Star led into the straight, but Toxeuma and Meadow Lark were just behind him at the distance. They fought out a good finish, Toxeuma beating Great Star by a neck, with Meadow Lark half a length away. Hunting Cry, finishing fast, was just over a length away, with Royal Saxon next, while Havering, Silver Paper and Cimabue were not far away. The winner was always going well and he finished strongly. Great Star showed that his Stewards’ Handicap form was all wrong. Hunting Cry was going well at the end and he is worth keeping in mind. FAST GALLOPERS APPEAR.

The eleven acceptors lined for the Irwell Handicap, They included several youngsters who had not previously had a race. One of these was Sleipner, a speedy Riccarton colt by Valkyrian, and he wan made a sound favourite. Tea Party and Tray Bond began fast, Tray Bond being in front at the end of a furlong, while Sleipner followed the pair to the course proper. Tea Party drew clear at the distance to beat Tray Bond easily by two lengths. Sleipner was two lengths away third, with Merry Peel finishing fast in fourth place and Rosy Morn close up. The three who filled the places are very fast gallopers, the first and second being by Tea Tray. The winner is a half sister to Listening Post, a good Southland performer a few seasons ago. HONOUR NEVER IN DANGER. The Honour-Jaloux bracket was backed to a short price in the Derby. Honour took charge early, leading out of the straight from Stealth, who was headed by Admiral Drake after going three furlongs, Semper Paratus and Jaloux being next with Eaglet and Count Palatine bringing up the rear;. They ran without much change for a ■mile. Then Count Palatine started to move up, while Semper Paratus dropped back. Honour led to the straight. Admiral Drake was in trouble a little further on, Jaloux and Count Palatine being left to chase Honour, while Eaglet had started to move up. Honour only had to be shaken up to draw away for an easy win by tivo lengths. Eaglet finished fast and just failed to reach Count Palatine by a neck, while Jaloux, who weakened in the last few strides, was half a length away. Then after a gap came Admiral Drake. The winner at no time seemed in serious danger, and now that Pink Coat is off the scene there is no doubt about Honour’s superiority among the three-year-olds of the Dominion. GLARE’S ATTRACTIVE FORM. Lucky Light was the only scratching for the Hagley Handicap and in a field of 19 Glare was a prominent favourite. Duellona led Sea Raid along the back with The Viscount, Glenrowan, Dolo- ’ mite hnd Royal Parade prominent ear- '

ly, while Tigrano and Dumblane moved up after going three furlongs. Two furlongs further on Glenrowan and Dum•blano joined Duellona in the lead, and they showed the way to the straight, where Glare, Avro, Sea Raid and Imateagirl and Dolomite were all showing up in the next bunch. Glenrowan retired when fairly in the straight, while Dumblane also started to drift back. Glare headed Duellona 100 yards from the post and won by half a length, while Duellona hung on long enough to beat Imateagirl by a nose. Avro was close up ,while after a gap Dumblane, King’s Jest and Sea Raid were next. The winner showed attractive form at the end of the Spring Plate on Saturday and seems a good sort. RABBI VERY IMPRESSIVE.

In the Shade and Hoylake were scratched for the Metropolitan Handicap, for which Rabbi and Prodice, were the prime fancies. Piuthair and Amor were soon in front, but Talisker headed them after going two furlongs. Prodiee, Pride, Rabbi and Black Mint were next all the way along the back. There was not much change for a mile. Then Yoma, Count Cavour and Spearmiss: also moved up. There was a big bunch together at the entrance to the straight. Prodice seemed to be going particularly well, but Rabbi shot to the front a little further on while Spearmiss ran into second place. Rabbi won easily by three lengths from Spearmiss, while Concentrate, who came on late, was two lengths away. A length further back Pride just beat Prodice, with Count Cavour, Seatown and Cashier close up. The winner’s performance was very impressive and it is hard to say how easily he won.

SMART HACK FROM OTAGO. Taurua was a screaming favourite for the Randolph Handicap but he drew an outside position and settled his chance by going off last. Assemble led Blue Metal, Tane, Hurly Burly and Fair Exchange for two furlongs. Then Hurly Burly took charge. She was out clear at the entrance to the straight, with Assemble, Blue Metal and Fair Exchange next. Assemble ran to the front at the distance, wJiile a little further on Blue Metal joined Hurly Burly with Austerity moving, up. Assemble won comfortably by a length from Austerity, who got up on the post to beat Blue Metal by a head, with Hurly Bnrly half a length away. Then came Netley, Some Toff and Taurua. The winner is a smart Otago hack who will win more races this season. Austerity started from the outside and ran a good: race, as did Taurua once he got going,. ATHOLSPEAR EARNS WIN. .. The day’s racing wa sconcluded with the Spsom Handicap, for which Atholspear and Consent were the popular fancies in a field of eight. Consent began smartly with Atholspear and Latin Quarter handy. Night Lad was slow off the mark, but a brilliant burst of speed carried him into second place at the end of two furlongs. He was in second place while a little further on he joined Consent in the lead, the pair being three lengths in front of Atholspear, Latin Quarter and Taboo at the five furlong post. They raced like this round the turn, but- approaching the straight the field closed up. Consent led Don Jose to the straight, with Atholspear just behind them and the rest of the field handy. Don Jose was going well at the distance, but he failed to stay and Atholspear came on to beat Consent by half a length, Don Jose was two lengths away, while Latin Quarter, after losing his place, came on with a fast run to finish fourth. Atholspear’s win was well earned after a good performance on Saturday. Incidentally it broke a run of tantalising luck for B. Burgeas, whose horses had been in places in four previous starts at the meeting. •

GRAND NATIONAL THOUGHT TOO BIG.

EFFORT TO REDUCE ENTRIES. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Nov. 10. The Daily Telegraph states that the authorities at Aintree are considering reducing the entries for the Grand Rational to reasonable proportions by confining the race to five-year-olds and upwards which have been placed in a steeplechase of three miles or upwards worth £2OO, or have been placed in any steeplechase at Aintree or have won a steeplechase anywhere worth £5OO. It is pointed out that the remarkable increase in the entries in recent years is due to the huge prize money. Owners in the past two years £12,550 and £12,925 respectively.'
