EAGER TO LEARN FLYING

APPLICATIONS POURING IN. B-y Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. In an interview to-day the Minister of Defence, the Hon. T. M. Wilford, stated that when recently the Defence Department publicly advertised for aircraftsmen and aircraft apprentices for the Air Force the number of vacancies to be filled was not mentioned in the advertisement. “To day,” the Minister said, “we have already received over 600 applications and the number of vacancies to be filled is 21. These consist of 15 for cadet mechanics, three for fitters (aero engine), one for a metal rigger and two for riggers (aero). Applications are still pouring in. Every day I am receiving telegrams and letters asking me to help young men to enter the force.

“I think it is time the public should know that there are over 600 applications in and only 21 positions to be filled,” added the Minister. “I would like to say, also, that the selection of those who are to fill the vacancies will only be approved by me after the Director of Air Services (Wing-Commander Grant Dalton) has made a recommendation.” The Minister said that when applications were recently called for ten men for the Sockburn aerodrome the department had to close down as 400 odd ap.plications were received almost at once.
