BOWLING SEASON OPENS
PATEA CLUB GAMES. The Patea Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday in ideal weather conditions. Visiting bowlers were present in large numbers from Hawera and Waverley. The chib president, Mr. P. Bourke, in welcoming the visitors, expressed the hope that they would enjoy the afternoon and find the local green to their liking. He called upon Mrs. Bourke to open the season by rolling up kitty and following on with the first bowl of the season. Excellent games were played during the afternoon. Before returning to Hawera, Messrs. Burgess and Goodwin, of the Hawera and Park Clubs respectively, thanked members of the chib for the very enjoyable afternoon’s play and the ladies for the refreshments. Details of the matches are: —

PATEA PERSONAL ITEMS. The Rev. C. Aker has returned from New Plymouth. Miss • A. Fraser, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. W. Paterson, after a trip abroad in the interests of the Child Welfare Department, left for the south on Monday. Mrs. C. Dymock, Taihape, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. C. Honeyfield senr., Egmont View. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Christensen have taken up their residence in Wanganui. Miss A. Fraser was the guest of honour at a bridge evening given by Miss N. Kelly at the nurses’ home on Saturday.
PATEA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Patea School Committee was held on Friday, Mr. R. E. Moore presiding. It was decided to improve the Egmont Street gateway, utilising the posts in Victoria Street for the purpose. The smartening of the memorial avenue was left for a working bee. Mr. Carey introduced the question of Sunday play or the school tennis courts, but after discussion the matter was dropped. The secretary reported no action had yet been taken in connection with laying a concrete kerb. It was decided to erect the kerb by means of working bees. Mr. Matthews drew attention to the ease with ■which the proficiency examination was passed, the percentage now being only 20 off the maximum. There was now a desire on th© department’s behalf to stiffen the examination with a view to reducing the number of pupils taking secondary courses.
PATEA MUSICAL SUCCESSES. Patea successes in connection with the Trinity College of Music examination conducted by Mr. E. Lowe, F.T.C.L., on Friday are:— Intermediate. HAWERA GOLF CLUB. WEEK-END MEDAL MATCH. Members of the Hawera Golf Club took part in a medal match on Saturday, over 30 competing, and J. N. Anderson returned the best card. SERIOUS OFFENCES ALLEGED. SALES COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Pleading not guilty to four serious charges, a caretaker named Lawrence James Sales, 29 yeare of age, was yesterday morning committed to the Supreme Court at New Plymouth for trial by Messrs. E. Dixon and J. M. Townsend, J.’sP. The commission of one unnatural offence and three indecent assaults on three males was alleged against Sales, who appeared on remand from October 9. Three of the offences were alleged to have taken place at Hawera and one at Patea. Detective A, B. Meiklejohn appeared for the police, and Mr. P. O’Dea for the accused. The evidence of the three boye and of Detective Meiklejohn was taken, after which accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed accused on his own recognisance of £2OO and one surety of £lOO ,conditional upon his reporting to jthe police each evening.
GENERAL ITEMS. To-morrow the Normanby Dairy 'Company will make an advance payment for September of Is 6d per lb butterfat, and will distribute 3d per lb for July and August supplies. This will bring the advance for the first three months of the -season to Is 6d. The executive of the Hawera Retailers’ Asscoiation at its last meeting enrolled seven new members. It was decided that a general meeting should be held instead of the next monthly meeting of the executive in order to give members an opportunity to discuss the universal half-holiday question and Christmas decorations and advertising.
A euehr© party will be held in the Manaia Town Hall on Friday in aid of the Red candidates. There will be good prizes for the winners.
PERSONAL. Mr. Fred Mills, of Hawera, will act as judge of Ayrshire cattle at the Royal Show at Invercargill next month. Mr. Alec. Muir, Hawera, has undergone an operation for appendicitis and is making favourable progress. Mr. 11. G. Dickie, M.P., visited Hawera during the week-end, returning to Wellington yesterday. Mr. A. G. Barker, sub-editor of the Hawera Star, has received an appointment on the sub-editorial staff of the Christchurch Press and will leave Hawera early next month. The funeral of Mr. T. White at Kaponga on Sunday was attended by people from many parts of Taranaki. Mr. White had been a farmer in various parts of the province for many years. The death is announced of Mr. John Read, of Norinanby, who had been about 67 years in New Zealand. He lived first at Lyttelton and then at Wellington, and on his retirement some years ago settled with his daughter, Mrs. W. G. Gane, at Normanby. He was 86 years of age. At a meeting of members of the Hawera Amateur Operatic Society last night a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. A. N. Lester. Messrs. H. N. Lester, Hawera, and V. N. Lester, Ngaere, sons of the late Mr. Lester, have been closely associated with the society for a consider--ble time.
